[Termes IGN] tempêteRésumé : (auteur) The availability of Landsat data (Landsat 4, 5, 7 and 8) from ~30 years makes it possible to analyze the forest long term dynamics at high resolution (30m). The performances of the Landsat time-series have been already demonstrated for mapping and monitoring the annual clear-cuts and the storm damage in the Landes Forest, that covers ~1 million ha in southwestern France and that is heavily managed with even-aged stands with rather short rotations after clear-cut harvesting. Our objectives aimed at improving, automating, and enriching these previous methods. This was to operationally produce over the whole Landes Forest not only (1) the annual maps of clear-cutting from 1984 up the current year but also (2) the map of the current age that was derived from the forest change detected every year since 1984. The developed methodology used the time-series of surface reflectance and cloud mask provided for Landsat by USGS and sought to cope the possible absence of cloud-free image during the interest season or the numerous missing data in Landsat 7 images after 2002. The retrospective processing of the Landsat time-series from 1984 to 2014 made it possible the prediction of actual current age with a satisfactory accuracy. [Termes IGN] Quercus ilexRésumé : (auteur) Context : In the framework of climate change, decreased tree growth and enhanced mortality induced by hot and dry conditions are increasing in many forests around the world, and particularly in Mediterranean forests.
Aims : Our aim was to estimate tree growth and mortality in a Mediterranean holm oak forest, using remote sensing data from MODIS.
Methods : We monitored annual increases of aboveground biomass by measuring tree basal area, and we determined tree mortality by counting dead stems. We analyzed the relationships between forest growth and mortality with mean annual values of some MODIS products and meteorological data.
Results : Mortality and increases of aboveground biomass correlated well with precipitation, September standardized precipitation/evapotranspiration indices (SPEI), and some MODIS products such as NDVI and enhanced vegetation index EVI. Other MODIS products such as gross primary production (GPP) and net photosynthesis, however, showed no clear relationship with tree mortality or measured increases of biomass.
Conclusion : The MODIS products as proxies of ecosystemic productivity (gross primary productivity, net photosynthesis) were weakly correlated with biomass increase, and did not reflect the mortality following the drought of autumn 2011. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) Despite advances in remote sensing, retrieving surface properties at high resolutions in complex terrain is a major challenge. Slope and aspect as well as the topography surrounding a target impact surface insolation and lead to variability in calculated surface reflectance even for homogeneous land cover. Retrieval of surface reflectance is particularly problematic in case of topographic shading, where the total irradiation at the surface is a combination of diffuse irradiation and terrain-reflected irradiation from nearby slopes. To facilitate the retrieval of surface reflectance from high-resolution optical remote sensing, we have explored the feasibility of using a three dimensional radiative transfer code to simulate gridded surface irradiance for a View the MathML source∼37km2 area in the New Zealand Southern Alps. We have tested the sensitivity of simulated irradiance and calculated surface reflectance both in- and outside shaded areas to atmospheric aerosol content, surface albedo, atmospheric boundary layer structure and different solar spectra. Retrieved surface reflectance has been shown to be highly sensitive to atmospheric aerosols and surface albedo, particularly for areas shaded by topography. Not considering atmospheric aerosols in topographic correction can increase derived surface reflectance by well over 50%, while terrain-reflected irradiance can contribute 40% to surface reflectance in shaded areas, even for wider valleys. Both factors should therefore be considered in topographic correction of satellite imagery, even for relatively aerosol-free atmospheres and low surface albedo. Topographic correction for the whole scene was performed with the model settings resulting in the smallest RMSD between surface reflectivity in shaded and unshaded areas of similar land cover. Topographic correction based on 3D radiative transfer simulations has proven to effectively remove topographic effects and almost equalise derived mean reflectance in- and outside shaded areas. While the effective removal of shadows likely requires a higher dynamic range than Landsat’s ETM+ can offer, we suggest further evaluation of this approach in future studies at other sites and with other sensors. [Termes IGN] SlovaquieRésumé : (auteur) This paper focuses on the flash flood assessment using a spatially-distributed hydrological model based on the Monte Carlo simulation method. The model is implemented as r.sim.water module in GRASS GIS and was applied to the Malá Svinka Basin in Eastern Slovakia where a heavy rainfall (100 mm/hr.) caused a flash flood event with deadly consequences in July 1998. The event was simulated using standard datasets representing elevation, soils and land cover. The results were captured in time series of water depth maps showing gradual changes in water depths across the basin. The hydrological effects of roads in the study area were simulated using the preferential flow feature of the model. This simulation helped to identify source areas contributing to flooding in built-up areas. The implementation in a GIS environment simplifies the data preparation and eventual modification for various scenarios and flood protection measures. The simulation confirmed excellent robustness and flexibility of the method. As one of the most rapidly urbanized cities in Canada, Saskatoon (SK) was selected as our study area. Surface brightness retrieving, Pearson correlation, linear regression modeling, and buffer analysis were applied to different satellite datasets. The results indicate that both Landsat and MODIS data can yield pronounced estimations of daily air temperature with a significantly adjusted R2 of 0.803 and 0.518 at the spatial scales of 120m and 1000 m, respectively.
