[Termes IGN] rapport signal sur bruitRésumé : (Auteur) The Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite acquired a sequence of data in 2001 and 2002 that highlighted the annual flooding of the lower Okavango Delta. The data were collected as part of the calibration/validation programme for the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) sensor on the NASA EO-1 satellite. The primary purpose of this study was to compare the capability of ALI to that of Landsat ETM + for large-scale mapping applications in the Okavango Delta. While the extent and inaccessibility of many areas of the Delta make application of remote sensing attractive, the availability of data with adequate spatial and spectral resolution has limited the characterization of the complex patterns of land cover and geomorphology in the Delta. Initial analysis of the ALI data via supervised classification clearly showed macro-flood features, delineation of downstream channel flow areas, and lateral-downstream inundation of the floodplain. These patterns and the proportions of flooding of the channel compared to that of the floodplain (impoundment) varied annually, from the wetter seasonal swamps through the drier seasonal and occasional swamps. Consistently higher classification accuracies achieved using ALI data relative to ETM + data are attributed to the higher signal-to-noise ratio and the increased dynamic range of the ALI data. [Termes IGN] validité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) NASA's flagship Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra satellite was launched in 1999 and began sensing in March 2000 coincident with the first major field campaign of the Southern Africa Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI 2000). Terra's five sensors were used to support SAFARI 2000 studies on the southern African environment, and SAFARI 2000's ground, aircraft and independent satellite data sets were used in turn to validate and improve the remote sensing products derived from Terra. In this article, we review southern Africa's natural and cultural features that we believe formed an optimal environment in which to test the EOS program (including new sensors, products, validation, scientific research, education and outreach). Through the course of the text, we reference and summarize the articles in the SAFARI 2000 Special Issue to highlight the natural links between remote sensing science and the subcontinent's characteristics. We also note contemporary forces of change in the southern Africa landscape whose impacts will challenge the remote monitoring capabilities of future sensors and scientists. The article concludes with a brief description of SAFARI 2000 data resources and access provisions. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper is concerned with the application of high spatial resolution elevation data derived from light detection and ranging technologies (lidar) to surface hydrologic modeling. In recent years, airborne lidar technology bas been employed to develop high accuracy digital elevation models (DEMs) with horizontal resolution on the order of a few meters. As with any spatial data product there are limits to the lidar's practical use that vary with the intended application. This paper considers potential issues and challenges for the use of lidar-derived DEMs in surface hydrologic modeling applications, such as characterizing flow direction and power, identifying sub-basins in a watershed, and calculating upstream contributing area and other variables. We compare results using conventional 30m DEMs and 6m lidar for a high relief study area and a low relief study area. Results are more comparable between these data sources, regardless of hydrologic operation, for the high relief area, while the similarity of results in the low relief area is dependent upon the particular operation. Post-processing on the lidar data successfully removed such flow obstacles as bridges that might have artificially impeded surface flow. An exploration of the effect of spatial resolution on results suggests that cell size is a more significant factor than production method.
