[Termes IGN] zone intertropicaleRésumé : (Auteur) Multi-temporal compositing of SPOT-4 VEGETATION imagery over tropical regions was tested to produce spatially coherent monthly composite images with reduced cloud contamination, for the year 2000. Monthly composite images generated from daily images (S1 product, 1-km) encompassing different land cover. types of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, were evaluated in terms of cloud contamination and spatial consistency. A new multi-temporal compositing algorithm was tested which uses different criteria for vegetated and non-vegetated or sparsely vegetated land cover types. Furthermore, a principal components transformation that rescales the noise in the image-Maximum Noise Fraction (MNF)- was applied to a multi-temporal dataset of monthly composite images and tested as a method of additional signal-to-noise ratio improvement. The back-transformed dataset using the first 12 MNF eigenimages yielded an accurate reconstruction of monthly composite images from the dry season (May to September) and enhanced spatial coherence from wet season images (October to April), as evaluated by the Moran's 1 index of spatial autocorrelation. This approach is useful for land cover- change studies in the tropics, where it is difficult to obtain cloud-free optical remote sensing imagery. In Mato Grosso, wet season composite images are important for monitoring agricultural crop cycles. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper is about the development of a decision-support system for water-pollution management and environmental planning. More specifically, the paper first presents the overall concept and the system architecture of a generic environmental decision-support system (EDSS) and then develops an EDSS especially for analysing the tidal flow pattern and water quality of China's Pearl River Delta. The EDSS developed here employs the object-oriented approach to design the environmental database and utilizes the system integration technology to develop the overall user-friendly system that operates in the Windows environment. Furthermore, the system can be expanded to facilitate automated model selection and analysis. The EDSS should be of value for managing water quality of river networks with complicated flow patterns, such as that found in the Pearl River Delta. [Termes IGN] triangulation localeRésumé : (Auteur) Triangulated irregular networks (TIN) can form the basis for multiple-resolution representations in distributed hydrogeomorphic simulations over complex basins. Current methods for deriving TIN meshes depend primarily on surface slope without considering other terrain attributes significant to the watershed response such as the specific basin area. As an alternative, we present a methodology for combining a hydrogeomorphic or landscape index with an unstructured triangulated mesh. Landscape indices provide a concise method for describing steady-state terrain processes by isolating the dominant physical factors. The mesh-generation algorithm results in an adaptive discretization that resembles the spatial pattern of the landscape index with a high resolution retained in areas expected to impact the basin response. We compare the proposed algorithm with a slope-preserving method as a means for initializing the terrain representation in two TIN-based hydrogeomorphic models. Through three case studies in saturation-excess runoff, transport-limited soil erosion and shallow landslide simulation, we assess the distributed model sensitivity to the triangulated terrain algorithm. Model comparisons reveal that the process-based triangulations focus the distributed simulation in regions anticipated via a steady-state index to affect the transient watershed response.
