In this study, seasonal variations in rainfall interception loss and canopy storage capacity as driven by canopy structure were predicted and the linkages were tested using seasonal filed measurements. The study was conducted in nine 50 m × 50 m Robinia pseudoacacia plots in the semiarid region of China’s Loess Plateau. Gross rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were measured in seasons with and without leaves in 2015 and 2016. Results show that measured average interception loss for the nine plots were 17.9% and 9.4% of gross rainfall during periods with leaves (the growing season) and without leaves, respectively. Average canopy storage capacity estimated using an indirect method was 1.3 mm in the growing season and 0.2 mm in the leafless season. Correlations of relative interception loss and canopy storage capacity to canopy variables were highest for leaf/wood area index (LAI/WAI) and canopy cover, followed by bark area, basal area, tree height and stand density. Combined canopy cover, leaf/wood area index and bark area multiple regression models of interception loss and canopy storage capacity were established for the growing season and in the leafless season in 2015. It explained 97% and 96% of the variations in relative interception loss during seasons with and without leaves, respectively. It also explained 98% and 99% of the variations in canopy storage capacity during seasons with and without leaves, respectively. The empirical regression models were validated using field data collected in 2016. The models satisfactorily predicted relative interception loss and canopy storage capacity during seasons with and without leaves. This study provides greater understanding about the effects of changes in tree canopy structure (e.g., dieback or mortality) on hydrological processes. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Knowledge of the maximum forest stand density and the self-thinning process is important for understanding, modelling and scheduling thinnings in silviculture. The upper trajectories of stem number, N, vs mean diameter, dq or mean tree volume vs stem number are often used for quantifying maximum stand density. The long debate about how site conditions modify these relationships is presently revived due to global change. A crucial question is whether environmental conditions alter the trajectories themselves or just the velocity at which stands move along them. Our contribution is based on fully stocked plots from long-term Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) fertilization experiments along an ecological gradient in South Germany. This allows us to compare the self-thinning trajectories of fertilized and unfertilized plots under different environmental conditions. We can show that repeated fertilization with nitrogen did not change the N ~ dq trajectories. Assuming that fertilization affects forests in a similar way as an ongoing atmospheric N-deposition, this means that presently growth, mortality, and volume accumulation in forest stands proceed faster in time but still follow the same N ~ dq allometric trajectories. Furthermore, we found that the level of the self-thinning line generally increases with the annual precipitation. The allometric self-thinning exponent, however, did not respond to environmental conditions. Finally, we quantitatively demonstrate and discuss the implications and consequences of the results regarding understanding and modelling forest stand dynamics, carbon sequestration and the development and adaptation of silvicultural guidelines in view of climate change. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (auteur) Natural disasters like floods are happening worldwide. Due to their negative impact on different social, economic and environmental aspects need to monitor and map these phenomena have increased. In fact, to access the zones affected by the flood, we use open source remote sensing (RS) images acquired by optical and radar sensors. Furthermore, we present a method using Sentinel-1 images; we suggest applying Ground Range Detected (GRD) images. For this purpose, pre-processed built and provided by the European Space Agency (ESA), preserved by free software Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) for data extraction around appropriate demand. Moreover, the principal objective of this article is to assess the capability of Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images in order to visualize flood areas in the Inaouene watershed located in north-eastern of Morocco. The origin of this natural hazard is the combination of natural and anthropogenic factors that makes the watershed vulnerable with a sub-annual frequency. The results of this work help decision-makers and managers in the field of natural risk management and land-use planning to implement a strategy and action plan for the protection of the populations and the environment against the negative impact of floods. [Termes IGN] transformation polynomialeRésumé : (auteur) The long (re-)convergence time seriously limits many applications of real-time precise point positioning (RTPPP) in challenging environments like urban vehicle navigation and hazards monitoring. Thus, we proposed a real-time fast-positioning model by introducing the regional between-satellite single-differenced (SD) ionospheric constraints into the undifferenced and uncombined PPP (UU-PPP). The line-of-sight ionospheric observables are extracted by the multi-GNSS (GPS + Galileo) UU-PPP method. The polynomial function with simple structure and high efficiency is applied to establish the real-time regional between-satellite SD ionospheric vertical total electron content (VTEC) model. The differential slant total electron content (dSTEC) variations retrieved from three VTEC models are validated with the between-satellite SD and epoch-differenced geometry-free combinations of dual-frequency phase observations. The average RMS values are 0.77, 0.78 and 0.47 TEC unit for the CLK93 real-time VTEC, CODE final GIM and regional between-satellite SD ionospheric VTEC model, respectively. In the positioning domain, the data of ten stations for 12 consecutive days in 2020 were used for implementing kinematic RTPPP with single-frequency (SF) and dual-frequency (DF) observations. Compared with the GPS + Galileo SF-RTPPP based on the GRoup And PHase Ionospheric Correction model, the initialization time of the SD ionospheric-constrained (SDIC) SF-RTPPP when converged to 0.2 m at the 68% confidence level can be improved from 58 to 32 min in horizontal and 72 to 49 min in vertical, and its positioning accuracy can be improved by 29.7 and 20.3% in the horizontal and vertical components, respectively. Meanwhile, the re-convergence errors of SDIC SF-RTPPP from the first epoch can be maintained at 0.15 m in three components. As to GPS + Galileo SDIC DF-RTPPP, the re-convergence time when converged to 0.1 m can be lower than 3 min in horizontal and 9 min in vertical, and the re-convergence errors at the first epoch could even be lower than 0.15 m in horizontal. Hence, the new positioning model can maintain high accuracy and improve the continuity of real-time kinematic positioning in a short time when the number of tracked satellites in the urban or canyon environment was greatly dropped due to signal blocking. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) It is expected that European Boreal and Temperate forests will be greatly affected by climate change, causing natural disturbances to increase in frequency and severity. To detangle how, through forest management, we can make forests less vulnerable to the impact of natural disturbances, we need to include the risks of such disturbances in our decision-making tools. The present review investigates: i) how the most important forestry-related natural disturbances are linked to climate change, and ii) different modelling approaches that assess the risks of natural disturbances and their applicability for large-scale forest management planning. Global warming will decrease frozen soil periods, which increases root rot, snow, ice and wind damage, cascading into an increment of bark beetle damage. Central Europe will experience a decrease in precipitation and increase in temperature, which lowers tree defenses against bark beetles and increases root rot infestations. Ice and wet snow damages are expected to increase in Northern Boreal forests, and to reduce in Temperate and Southern Boreal forests. However, lack of snow cover may increase cases of frost-damaged seedlings. The increased temperatures and drought periods, together with a fuel increment from other disturbances, likely enhance wildfire risk, especially for Temperate forests. For the review of European modelling approaches, thirty-nine disturbance models were assessed and categorized according to their required input variables and to the models’ outputs. Probability models are usually common for all disturbance model approaches, however, models that predict disturbance effects seem to be scarce.
