[Termes IGN] signal GPSRésumé : (Auteur) We evaluate the potential of troposphere models derived from ground meteorological data (pressure, temperature, and relative humidity) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data to improve InSAR measurements and models derived from them. We test this approach on an ERS-2/Envisat data set collected during a transient surface deformation episode that occurred from January to July 2005 in the San Gabriel Valley, southern California, USA. We find that the interferometric phase change observed over the corresponding period cannot be solely attributed to hydrological uplift associated with rising groundwater levels but also includes a significant contribution from differential tropospheric delay due to differing quantities of water vapor in the troposphere on the two SAR observation dates. We show that, if the tropospheric phase contribution is mistakenly interpreted as the range change associated with changes in groundwater storage, both the surface displacement and the groundwater storage coefficient may be overestimated by up to 30%. This method could be applied in real time where meteorological measurements are available near one or more GPS permanent site(s). [Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) Variance components analysis of residual errors remaining in the GPS double-difference phase observations is presented in this paper. These errors arise due to unmodeled ionospheric, tropospheric and multipath effects and limit the accuracy of n (northwards), e (eastwards) and u (upwards) coordinate estimates. In addition, there are unavoidable pure random errors. An integral approach to variance components estimation of the residual errors is presented herein. The mathematical basis of the approach lies in the two-way nested classification, where one uses a linear model with random effects. It turned out that, for a baseline of 40km in length at mid-latitude region and during a year of the lowest sunspot activity in the 11-year cycle, daily standard deviations estimates of combined tropospheric and ionospheric effects are with intervals of ~1–11mm, ~1–7mm and ~4–51mm for n, e and u coordinate, respectively. In the same order, for the multipath effects, the intervals are ~4–12mm, ~3–9mm and ~8–30mm, while with pure random error those are ~5–9mm, ~4–7mm and ~9–20mm. It is important to say that the highest values arise in summer and the lowest in winter period. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) The dominant error source of Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) is atmospheric phase screen (APS), resulting in phase delay of the radar signal propagating through the atmosphere. The APS in the atmosphere can be decomposed into stratified and turbulent components. In this paper, we introduced a method to compensate for stratified component in a radar interferogram using ERA-Interim reanalysis products obtained from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Our comparative results with radiosonde data demonstrated that atmospheric condition from ERA-Interim could produce reasonable patterns of vertical profiles of atmospheric states. The stratified atmosphere shows seasonal changes which are correlated with time. It cannot be properly estimated by temporal high-pass filtering which assumes that atmospheric effects are random in time in conventional persistent scatterer InSAR (PSI). Thus, the estimated deformation velocity fields are biased. Therefore, we propose the atmosphere-corrected PSI method that the stratified delay are corrected on each interferogram by using ERA-Interim. The atmospheric residuals after correction of stratified delay were interpreted as random variations in space and time which are mitigated by using spatial–temporal filtering. We applied the proposed method to ENVISAT ASAR images covering Taiyuan basin, China, to study the ground deformation associated with groundwater withdrawal. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly mitigate the topography-correlated APS and the estimated ground displacements agree more closely with GPS measurements than the conventional PSI. A special screening procedure is developed for the removal of outliers in the GPS Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) data. ZTD data are converted to integrated water vapour (IWV) using surface pressure information from an AROME-WMED operational analysis. The reprocessed ZTD and IWV data are used to assess the accuracy of the near-real time E-GVAP ZTD data assimilated in operational numerical weather prediction systems and to validate the IWV data from the AROME-WMED operational analysis and AROME-WMED reanalysis 1, and from radiosonde observations. The mean differences between E-GVAP and reprocessed ZTD data are not negligible and lie in the range from −3 to +3 mm. The standard deviations of differences are between 4 and 8 mm. The comparisons of IWV from AROME-WMED analyses and the reprocessed GPS data show high quality of the analyses where operational GPS data are assimilated and lower quality where no GPS data are assimilated. Small but significant biases are found in the radiosonde data during daytime (−0.5 to +1.4 kg m−2), but their origin is not determined so far. Thanks to the high spatial density of the reprocessed GPS stations, both the large-scale and small-scale variations in IWV can be documented. The case of HyMeX Intensive Observing Period 8 is presented as an example of a heavy precipitation event. This work suggests that improved quality of the humidity fields can be expected of the future AROME-WMED reanalysis 2 as a result of the assimilation of the reprocessed GPS data. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) The continuous evolution of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) meteorology has led to an increased use of associated observations for operational modern low-latency numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, which assimilate GNSS-derived zenith total delay (ZTD) estimates. The development of NWP models with faster assimilation cycles, e.g., 1-h assimilation cycle in the rapid update cycle NWP model, has increased the interest of the meteorological community toward sub-hour ZTD estimates. The suitability of real-time ZTD estimates obtained from three different precise point positioning software packages has been assessed by comparing them with the state-of-the-art IGS final troposphere product as well as collocated radiosonde (RS) observations. The ZTD estimates obtained by BNC2.7 show a mean bias of 0.21 cm, and those obtained by the G-Nut/Tefnut software library show a mean bias of 1.09 cm to the IGS final troposphere product. In comparison with the RS-based ZTD, the BNC2.7 solutions show mean biases between 1 and 2 cm, whereas the G-Nut/Tefnut solutions show mean biases between 2 and 3 cm with the RS-based ZTD, and the ambiguity float and ambiguity fixed solutions obtained by PPP-Wizard have mean biases between 6 and 7 cm with the references. The large biases in the time series from PPP-Wizard are due to the fact that this software has been developed for kinematic applications and hence does not apply receiver antenna eccentricity and phase center offset (PCO) corrections on the observations. Application of the eccentricity and PCO corrections to the a priori coordinates has resulted in a 66 % reduction of bias in the PPP-Wizard solutions. The biases are found to be stable over the whole period of the comparison, which are criteria (rather than the magnitude of the bias) for the suitability of ZTD estimates for use in NWP nowcasting. A millimeter-level impact on the ZTD estimates has also been observed in relation to ambiguity resolution. As a result of a comparison with the established user requirements for NWP nowcasting, it was found that both the G-Nut/Tefnut solutions and one of the BNC2.7 solutions meet the threshold requirements, whereas one of the BNC2.7 solution and both the PPP-Wizard solutions currently exceed this threshold.
