[Termes IGN] Royaume-UniRésumé : (Auteur) Having been involved personally with orthophotos for well over thirty years, it has always been a matter of disappointment and some perplexity to observe how little interest there has been in orthophotos in the U.K. By contrast in most of Western Europe. There has been a long standing interest in and considerable use made of orthophotos and of the products derived from them. An obvious example is Sweden which started in 1937 with controlled mosaics and then, from 1966 onwards, utilized orthophotos as the basis for the main part of its national map coverage at 1:10,000 scale, with 1:20,000 scale used in the remote areas in the north of the country. Numerous other examples can be quoted e.g. the German Grundkarte (Base Map) at 1:5,000 scale has also been produced in orthophoto form in several of the German states (Lander) since the Late 1960s and early 1970s; and the 1:10,000 scale Orthophotoplan series was produced originally by the Aero Survey company for the whole of Belgium and has since been repeated by the Eurosense company. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The author propose an approach to automatic recovery of a realistic 3D surface from photos or videos. There is no need whatsoever for measurements in the scene or calibration procedures. It is just as easy to model a small object (using a macro lens), as to model a complete building or even a whole landscape. The method thus offers a previously unknown flexilbility in 3D model acquisition, accompanied by a decrease in cost. This flexibility opens the way to many new applications. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (auteur) A new semi-automatic tool for contour line generation from photgrammetrically determined DEMs was put into production within some units of IGN France at the beginning of 1999. DEM generation is done with photgrammetric image matching software, which uses both area-based and feature-based techniques in a hierarchical approach. The best result with the new procedure have been obtained in areas with high relief. Its use in suburban areas is problematic. The result are sufficient for medium scale mapping and will improve with higher quality images deriving from digital cameras. [Termes IGN] orthorectificationRésumé : (Auteur) Orthophotos are important image products for a multitude of mapping, management and monitoring purposes. Besides data in the form of aerial or satellite imagery, a set of control points and DEMs, an appropriate system is necessary to generate from the data the rectified photo mosaics. This article describes the suitability of ImageStation OrthoPro for carrying out this task. The main features of the system and its orthophoto production workflow are described. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Editeur) This tutorial survey brings together two lines of research and development whose interaction promises to have significant practical impact on the area of spatial information processing in the near future: geographic information systems (GIS) and geometric computation or, more particularly, geometric algorithms and spatial data structures. In nine uniformly structured and coherent chapters, the authors present a unique survey ranging from the history and basic characteristics to current issues of precision and robustness of geometric computing. This textbook is ideally suited for advanced courses on GIS and applied geometric algorithms. Research and design professionals active in the area will find it valuable as a state-of-the-art.
