[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Optimal seamline detection is a key step when composing digital orthophotomaps (DOM) of extensive areas from overlapping ortho‐images. To avoid seamlines passing through buildings when mosaicking, seamline detection between adjacent ortho‐images is casted as a graph‐cut problem. To avoid buildings, colour differences and gradient magnitude derived from the ortho‐images, together with approximate object heights derived from a digital surface model (DSM), are combined for constructing the cost term of the graph. To efficiently obtain an approximate height value for each DOM unit, an expanded normalised DSM is proposed. Furthermore, the designed cost term for final composite ortho‐image merging is weighted to prioritise pixels closest to the nadir point. Experiments with strips of aerial images show that the proposed method obtains seamless mosaicking of ortho‐images without manual work. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) In most GIS software, geometric measurements (length, area) computed from the geometry of vector objects are performed in two dimensions, which generates systematic underestimates. Several reasons can explain this critical situation: two of these include deficiencies in the geometric modelling of vector data and absence of correctly implemented methods for computing measurements using altitudes. To reduce the systematic error in geometric measurements caused by the omission of altitudes, methods are proposed to (1) enrich the geometry of geographical features using external altimetric data and (2) compute length and area using altitudes. These propositions are implemented in a model that allows any GIS user to take terrain into account in the computation of length and area and estimate the underestimation involved in two-dimensional measurements. Experiments are finally performed to illustrate the functioning of the model and test the impact of the quality of several altimetric data sources. Results demonstrate that freely available digital elevation models reduce measurement error. Based on comparisons with high-resolution databases, the results also show that omitting the terrain is not sufficient to assess the entire measurement error, which is also affected by other processes, such as digitizing error and cartographic projection. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Light detection and ranging (lidar)-derived elevation data are commonly subjected to outliers due to the boundaries of occlusions, physical imperfections of sensors, and surface reflectance. Outliers have a serious negative effect on the accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs). To decrease the impact of outliers on DEM construction, we propose a robust interpolation algorithm of multiquadric (MQ) based on a regularized least absolute deviation (LAD) technique. The objective function of the proposed method includes a regularization-based smoothing term and an LAD-based fitting term, respectively, used to smooth noisy samples and resist the influence of outliers. To solve the objective function of the proposed method, we develop a simple scheme based on the split-Bregman iteration algorithm. Results from simulated data sets indicate that when sample points are noisy or contaminated by outliers, the proposed method is more accurate than the classical MQ and two recently developed robust algorithms of MQ for surface modeling. Real-world examples of interpolating 1 private and 11 publicly available airborne lidar-derived data sets demonstrate that the proposed method averagely produces better results than two promising interpolation methods including regularized spline with tension (RST) and gridded data-based robust thin plate spline (RTPS). Specifically, the image of RTPS is too smooth to retain terrain details. Although RST can keep subtle terrain features, it is distorted by some misclassified object points (i.e., pseudooutliers). The proposed method obtains a good tradeoff between resisting the effect of outliers and preserving terrain features. Overall, the proposed method can be considered as an alternative for interpolating lidar-derived data sets potentially including outliers. [Termes IGN] projectionRésumé : (auteur) The recent initiatives to digitize cultural heritage resources and publish them on the Web have renewed interest in historical maps for the diachronic analysis of territories in GIS applications. However, such analyses should not be done without a good understanding of the possibilities and limitations of geographical information provided by historical maps, i.e. their quality. One of the major concerns regarding historical maps quality is their positional planimetric accuracy which highly depends on survey techniques used at the time. As these techniques are not always thoroughly known and as ground truth is most of the time not sufficiently available, direct absolute evaluation approaches have been proposed to assess historical maps positional planimetric accuracy. In this article, we follow the intuition that the most widely adopted georeferencing-based approach for assessing the positional planimetric accuracy of historical maps can be adapted to provide an evaluation of the error caused by the survey process in cases like Paris atlases where the georeferencing transformation can be estimated with ground control points based on geodetic features and where the projection of the map can be approximated by a well known projected coordinate reference system. We apply this tuned approach on the Verniquet atlas and evaluate the validity of our hypothesis about projection approximation.
