[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Knowledge of offset vectors from vessel mounted sonars, to systems such as Inertial Measurement Units and Global Navigation Satellite Systems is crucial for accurate ocean mapping applications. Traditional survey methods, such as employing laser scanners or total stations, are used to determine professional vessel offset distances reliably. However, for vessels of opportunity that are collecting volunteer bathymetric data, it is beneficial to consider survey methods that may be less time consuming, less expensive, or which do not involve bringing the vessel into a dry dock. Thus, this article explores two alternative methods that meet this criterion for horizontally calibrating vessels. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) were used to horizontally calibrate a vessel with both Structure from Motion photogrammetry and aerial lidar while the vessel was moored to a floating dock. Estimates of the horizontal deviations from ground truth, were obtained by comparing the horizontal distances between targets on a vessel, acquired by the UAS methods, to multiple ground truth sources: a survey-grade terrestrial laser scan and fiberglass tape measurements. The investigated methods were able to achieve horizontal deviations on the order of centimeters with the use of Ground Control Points. [Termes IGN] visualisation multiéchelleRésumé : (auteur) As a key focus of cartography and terrain analysis, the simplification of a digital elevation model (DEM) is used to preserve the pattern features of the terrain surface while suppressing its details over multiple scales. Statistical filtering and structural analysis methods are commonly used for this process. The structural analysis method performs well in identifying terrain structural edges, while it tends to discard the smooth morphology of a terrain surface. In addition, the filter that aims to reduce noise on a surface may over-smooth the terrain structural edges. Therefore, to preserve both the terrain structural edges and smooth morphology, we propose to combine the techniques of statistical filtering and structural analysis. Specifically, all the critical elevation points and structural edges are first detected from the DEM surface by using the structural analysis method. Then, the iterative guided normal filter is used to smooth the generalized DEM with the guidance of the structure of the original surface. After this process, the terrain structure is retained in the smooth surface of the DEM. The experimental results with a real-world dataset show that our method can inherit the merits of both structural analysis and statistical filter in preserving terrain features for multi-scale DEM representations. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) To attenuate positional errors of LiDAR-derived datasets for constructing digital elevation models (DEMs), a feature-preserving point denoising algorithm (F-PDA) is developed in this paper. F-PDA includes three main steps: surface normal estimation, normal filtering and point position update. Numerical tests with two simulated surfaces indicate that F-PDA is always more accurate than kriging and natural neighbour. Furthermore, F-PDA has a high effectiveness of preserving feature lines. Real-world examples of interpolating LiDAR samples demonstrate that F-PDA can best retain both prominent and subtle terrain features, while faithfully removing errors in mountainous and flat regions. Moreover, it outperforms some well-known interpolation methods. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) This paper addresses forest height estimation for boreal forests at the test site of Edson in Alberta, Canada, using dual-baseline PolInSAR dataset measured by Intermap’s single-pass system. This particular dataset is acquired by using both ping-pong and non-ping-pong modes, which permit forming a dual-baseline TomoSAR configuration, i.e., an extreme configuration for tomographic processing. A tomographic approach, based on polarimetric Capon and MUSIC estimators, is proposed to estimate the elevation of tree top and of underlying ground, and hence forest height is estimated. The resulting forest DTM and DSM over the test site are validated against LiDAR-derived estimates, demonstrating the undeniable capability of the single-pass L-band PolInSAR system for forest monitoring. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (auteur) Elevation gradients are primary components of slope and aspect. Significant concerns remain when computing gradients if noise (perturbing non-DEM data) is present. There is still a need to find ways to balance accuracy of the gradient and stability to noise for specific types of DEM. In this study, six algorithms are compared using four DEMs and analyzed for stability to base level DEM noise and added random noise. Theoretical stability and accuracy of the formulae are analyzed using harmonic (frequency or spatial scale) response. The results provide a basis to determine the most appropriate algorithm for different situations. They show that: (1) the set (Evans-Young (EY), Sharpnack (Sp), Sobel (Sb)) has a better stability to noise ratio than the set (Zevenbergen (Z), Florinsky (F), Horn (H)). EY has the smoothest surface and the highest stability to noise ratio. If stability is the primary measure in mid-frequencies, EY is a good choice. (2) Sb is good because of its accuracy in mid to high frequencies. Out to the highest frequencies, Sb is the best. (3) F has potential but should not be used with very high-frequency noise. (4) H and Z should not be used when there is substantial noise.
