[Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) Mudslides and debris flows are now more common problems in tropical regions than landslides. This article addresses the issue of modelling mudslide-susceptible locations using an information value approach. Landsat 7 (ETM+) was employed to create a land-use map with limited field checks. Other parameters considered were lineament, road, soil, stream network and lithology. Topographic parameters such as slope and aspect play a dominant role in slope stability studies. Maps for slope and aspects were developed from a digital elevation model using statistical surface interpolation techniques. This article offers insight into the importance of the selection of suitable surface interpolation techniques. The three surface interpolation techniques evaluated in the study were: inverse distance weighted, Kriging and Spline. These were found to have varied accuracies of interpolation surfaces for all parameters, including elevation, slope and aspect. Surfaces offering the best accuracy were adopted for the information value approach for mudslide susceptibility zonation. [Termes IGN] Pays de GallesRésumé : (Auteur) Modelling and extracting 3D geographical data presents numerous challenges that require continual research to attempt to evolve an efficient, reliable and accurate solution. LiDAR data capture and analysis has become a preferred acquisition choice for elevation data because the resulting quality and level of detail far exceeds traditional methods for large survey areas. As with any data collection system, LiDAR is prone to errors. Analysing these errors, ascertaining causes and producing error correction strategies is vital if accurate and confident results are to be obtained. Eight years of LiDAR datasets (from 1998 to 2005) have been closely analysed for a large coastal area of South Wales. This article provides a detailed and accurate summary of the identified LiDAR data issues and subsequent errors which affect the accuracy of end products such as Digital Surface Models (DSMs). [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar systems have been widely adopted for the acquisition of dense and accurate topographic data over extended areas. The level of detail and the quality of the collected point cloud motivated the research community to investigate the possibility of automatic object extraction from such data. Prior knowledge of the terrain surface will improve the performance of object detection and extraction procedures. In this paper, a new strategy for automatic terrain extraction from lidar data is presented. The proposed strategy is based on the fact that sudden elevation changes, which usually correspond to non-ground objects, will cause relief displacements in perspective views. The introduced relief displacements will occlude neighboring ground points. To start the process, we generate a digital surface model (DSM) from the irregular lidar points using an interpolation procedure. The presence of sudden-elevation changes and the resulting occlusions can be discerned by sequentially checking the off-nadir angles to the lines of sight connecting the DSM cells and a pre-defined set of synthesized projection centers. Detected occlusions are then used to identify the occluding points, which are hypothesized to be non-ground points. Surface roughness and discontinuities together with inherent noise in the point cloud will lead to some false hypotheses. Therefore, we use a statistical filter to remove these false hypotheses. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated and verified using both simulated and real lidar datasets with varying levels of complexity. Compared to the general 3-D Douglas-Peucker algorithm put forward by the authors in the previous publication, further improvements and expansion of the algorithm have been included in this article, namely, (1) for randomly distributed points, 'loneliness index' of the current point has been taken as the dynamic weight factor of the point-plane distance, so as to improve the selection of the feature points; (2) aiming at the mass volume of the regular square grids, which forms the majority of the DEM data; three measures have been suggested in this article for the improvement of the efficiency of the automated generalization. Experiments have proven that these measures can greatly heighten the efficiency of the DEM generalization with satisfactory results and have offered us the practical possibility of on-the-fly global generalization of DEM with a huge volume of data. [Termes IGN] simulation PleiadesRésumé : (Auteur) Among all the issues involved in Geographic Information Science, automating the update of 2D building databases is a crucial and challenging issue. Such an update usually starts out with a manual change detection process. The main goal of this paper is to present a new method to automate the detection of changes in a 2D building database, starting from satellite images. The workflow of our approach is divided into 2 phases. Primitives, extracted from multiple images or from a correlation Digital Surface Model (DSM), are firstly collected for each building and matched with primitives derived from the existing database to achieve a final decision about acceptance or rejection. A specific algorithm, based on the DSM and a computed Digital Terrain Model (DTM), is subsequently used to extract new buildings. The method is here introduced and tested in two test areas, very different regarding the land use and topography. The out-comes of the method are assessed and show the good performance of our system, especially in terms of completeness, robustness and transferability.
