This process of generalisation necessarily requires us to handle large volumes of data which results in high processing overheads. One way of managing this is to partition the data. When geographically partitioning data, we need to partition in such a way that each partition can be generalized without having to consider regions outside any given partition. The focus of this paper is to explore partitioning and generalisation methodologies that can be applied to digital elevation data - the ambition being to derive generalized descriptions of morphology at the National Scale (for the UK). The paper describes and compares two solutions to this problem, and demonstrates how it is possible to apply generalisation algorithms to national coverages. [Termes IGN] transport sédimentaireRésumé : (Auteur) Understanding the spatial pattern of erosion in inter-rill and rill areas can be useful in locating sources of sediment and in determining down-slope sediment delivery. However, spatial information about erosion processes in the inter-rill and rill areas under field conditions is often limited owing to the non-availability of a detailed microtopography. This paper aims to present a method for the survey of microtopographic soil surface changes caused by erosion and to investigate the development of sediment transport and rill erosion in the inter-rill and rill areas for a given rainfall event. The approach is based on the application of close range digital photogrammetry to produce differences of digital elevation models (DEMs), automatically measured and generated but with manual 3D point editing. Quality analysis of the DEM measurements has shown that erosion and deposition can be detected with a relative error of 12·8 to 15·3mm. The minimum average sediment yield from plots with an area of 53m2after the occurrence of 46 to 70mm of erosive rainfall was estimated to be 1·24 to 3·5kgm-2. The spatial pattern of erosion and deposition on inter-rill and rill areas has proved the relative efficiency of rills to transport sediments from inter-rill areas with a sediment delivery ratio greater than one. Thus at erosive rainfall events, the transport capacity of the rill flow was not a limiting condition. The rill network was controlled by abrupt change in surface microtopography where rough surfaces produced many smaller rills but fewer contributing rills than relatively smooth surfaces. Tillage-induced surface roughness, the presence of stones and sparse vegetation, and the borders of individual plots were found to present challenges to the photogrammetric techniques, and to introduce errors which inhibit fully automatic DEM generation. The precision of the DEMs was constrained by the precision of ground control points (GCPs), camera lens distortion towards format edges and DEM extraction parameters. Despite this limitation, however, the application of digital photogrammetry enabled the measurement of high-frequency microtopographic surfaces and characterisation of the spatial distribution of erosion and deposition and of rill erosion development during highly erosive rainfall events. [Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of the third dimension from remote sensing data is a well known technique. Since in a number of countries aerial images and laser scanner data are unavailable, expensive or classified, stereoscopic high-resolution optical satellite images provide a viable alternative for generating digital surface and digital terrain models. Especially the automatic extraction of highly accurate 3D surface models in urban areas is still a very complicated task due to occlusions, large differences in height and the variety of objects and surface material. In this paper, an analysis and a visual and quantitative comparison of three different matching algorithms for generating urban DSMs based on very high-resolution satellite images is presented. The three algorithms are least squares matching (lsm) in a region growing fashion, dynamic programming (DP) and semiglobal matching (sgm). The characteristics of the three algorithms as applied to four different Ikonos stereo pairs with a ground sampling distance of 1 m are shown. The following results were obtained: visually, in the lsm results the shape of the buildings is considerably smoothed. While in the DP results the building shape is sharper, only little detail is visible on the building roofs, and streaking along the epipolar lines causes problems. With SGM, more details can be extracted and the results visually have the best quality. Based on reference data for the different test sites, the standard deviation of the building heights determined by LSM and DP is in the range of one pixel or slightly better, while it is in the range of half a pixel for SGM. [Termes IGN] primitive géométriqueRésumé : (auteur) The analysis of remotely sensed data for object extraction is a key step in an increasing number of GIS (Geographic Information Science) applications, in particular for mapping, updating and change detection purposes. The main goal of this paper is to present an automatic method for detecting changes in a 2D building database, starting from recent satellite images. The workflow of our method is divided into two steps. 3D primitives, extracted from multiple images or from a correlation Digital Surface Model (DSM), are firstly collected for each building and matched with primitives derived from the existing database in order to achieve a final decision about acceptance or rejection. A specific algorithm, based on the DSM and a computed Digital Terrain Model (DTM), is subsequently used to extract new buildings. The method is here introduced and tested in two test areas, very different regarding the land use and topography. The outcomes of the method are assessed and show the good performance of our system, especially in terms of completeness, robustness and transferability.
