[Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) Elevations for digital surface model (DSM) generation were extracted from different stereo high-resolution (HR) images (QuickBird and Ikonos) using 3D physical and empirical geometric models. The 3D physical model is Toutin's model (TM) developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, and the empirical model is the rational function model (RFM). First, Vendor-supplied RFMs refined with polynomial functions and TM were compared for the sensor orientations with least-squares adjustments with different number of ground control points (GCPs). TM and RFMs gave similar results with Ikonos as soon as RFM was refined with a shift computed from at least one GCP. On the other hand, TM gave better results than RFMs with QuickBird regardless of the number of GCPs. Due to relief dependency, QuickBird RFM needed to be refined at least with linear functions computed from at least 6-10 GCPs. Some large errors were, however, noted on forward image RFM in column. The stereo-extracted elevations of DSMs were then compared to 0.2-m accurate Lidar elevation data. Because DSM stereo-extracted elevations included the height of land covers (trees, houses), elevation linear errors with 68 percent confidence level (LE68) were computed for the entire area and three land-cover classes (forested, urban/residential, bare surface). TM and RFMs with Ikonos, regardless of the method and GCP number, achieved comparable results for all classes while TM achieved overall better results than RFMs with QuickBird. All results demonstrated the necessity of refining Ikonos RFM with a tri-directional shift and at least one GCP but QuickBird RFM with 1st order linear functions and 6-10 GCPs. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) In this work, a theoretical-empirical model has been developed for the modelling of the local geometric accuracy of digital orthoimages from panchromatic QuickBird Very High Resolution Satellite Imagery (VHRSI). The empirical component integrates the error of sensor orientation and its propagation to the orthoimage generation process. The theoretical component, mainly a geometrical study from QuickBird Image Metadata File, seeks to model the propagation of DEM error throughout the orthorectificacion process in addition to the previous errors of the bundle adjustment. For the goal of model developing and calibration, a panchromatic QuickBird Basic Imagery was acquired on 19 December 2004, registering a mean collected GSD of 0.62 m, off-nadir view angle of 8.4° and an azimuth and elevation angle of the satellite with respect to the centre of the image of 123.3 and 80.9° respectively. The QuickBird image employed covered an area of 17 x 18 Km over the district of Nijar, located at the North-East of Almeria city, Spain. It was centred on the UTM coordinates European Datum ED50 (easting and northing) of 577,848 and 4,087,277 m. The Toutin's 3D physical model was the selected method to compute the bundle adjustment and so to carry out the sensor orientation using PCI Geomatica OrthoEngine software v. 9.1.7. On this score, 3D coordinates of 124 ground points were measured by means of high precision differential GPS techniques. From the whole set of ground points, a sub-set of 45 ones uniformly distributed was selected for the sensor orientation (GCPs), whereas the remaining 79 were used as independent checkpoints (ICPs) to assess the performance of the developed model regarding to the average error of the final orthoimages. In as much to the results, the empirical component, which takes into account the effect of pointing error and number and accuracy of GCPs on sensor orientation, presented an acceptable fitting to the experimental data, with a regression coefficient R2 = 0.932. The theoretical component also offered good results, observing like the proposed model reproduces with reasonable accuracy the statistical behaviour of the 2D orthoimage errors measured at the 79 ground points checked. The findings obtained in this work could be used as a guide for the selection of appropriate operational parameters in projects related to digital cartography production and updating from QuickBird imagery. [Termes IGN] squelettisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper is about an example of PLEIADES applications, the 3D building reconstruction. The future PLEIADES satellites are especially well adapted to deal with 3D building reconstruction through the sub-metric resolution of images and its stereoscopic characteristics. We propose a fully automatic 3D-city model of dense urban areas using a parametric approach. First, a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is generated using an algorithm based on a maximum-flow formulation using three views. Then, building footprints are extracted from the DEM through an automatic method based on marked point processes : they are represented by an association of rectangles that we regularize by improving the connection of the neighboring rectangles and the facade discontinuity detection. Finally, a 3D-reconstruction method based on a skeleton process which allows to model the rooftops is proposed from the DEM and the building footprints. The different building heights constitute parameters which are estimated and then regularized by the "K-means" algorithm including an entropy term. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyzes the potential of airborne laser scanner data for measuring individual tree height growth in a boreal forest using 82 sample trees of Scots pine. Point clouds (10 points/m2, beam size 40 cm) illuminating 50 percent of the treetops were acquired in September 1998 and May 2003 with the Toposys 83 kHz lidar system. The reference height and height growth of pines were measured with a tacheometer in the field. Three different types of features were extracted from the point clouds representing each tree; they were the difference between the highest z values, the difference between the DSMs of the tree crown, and the differences between the 85th, 90th and 95th percentiles of the canopy height histograms corresponding to the crown. The best correspondence with the field measurements was achieved with an R2 value of 0.68 and a RMSE of 43 cm. The results indicate that it is possible to measure the growth of an individual tree with multi-temporal laser surveys. We also demonstrated a new algorithm for tree-to-tree matching. It is needed in operational growth estimation based on individual trees, especially in dense spruce forests. The method is based on minimizing the distances between treetops in the N- dimensional data space. The experiments showed that the use of the location (derived from laser data) and height of the trees were together adequate to provide reliable tree-to-tree matching. In the future, a fourth dimension (the crown area) should also be included in the matching. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEM) from satellite data are generated mainly from two types of datasets using completely different methods: photogrammetry for optical stereo images (e.g. SPOT5, IKONOS) and interferometry for Synthetic Aperture Radar data (InSAR, e.g. ERS-Tandem, SRTM). Both generation methods show advantages and disadvantages but have similar accuracy values in comparison to a reference DEM. The paper aims at showing the potential for combined usage of several DSM (derived with different sensors and methods) to improve the overall accuracy. Some results are given for DEM fusion utilizing height error maps for each DSM and for DEM integration, where single point information from another DSM is inserted during the triangulation process. The quality of the DSM derived from one source and of the combined DSM depends on the steepness of the terrain and on the land cover type. For flat terrain or moderate hilly landscapes, a height accuracy in the order of 5 meters or better can be achieved for the mentioned sensors. Two test areas are chosen, where many different data sets are available and much knowledge exists from previous studies. The first test area is a region in the south-eastern part of Bavaria comprising a mostly hilly, post-glacial landscape including lakes and also mountains of the German Alps. The second test area is located in Catalonia, Spain, and includes the city of Barcelona as well as a mostly hilly terrain with some steep slopes and additionally the Mediterranean coast. The received DSM are compared qualitatively and quantitatively to the reference DEM with superior quality by looking at profiles and sub-area statistics. The results show that an improvement of the fused DSM and the integrated DSM can be quantitatively measured. Although the overall statistics for a larger region does show only a slight improvement, local errors can be reduced significantly so that the overall accuracy of the combined DSM is higher.
