[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Recent advances in airborne light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology allow rapid and inexpensive measurements of topography over large areas. This technology is becoming a primary method for generating highresolution digital terrain models (DTMs) that are essential to numerous applications such as flood modeling and landslide prediction. Airborne LIDAR systems usually return a threedimensional cloud of point measurements from reflective objects scanned by the laser beneath the flight path. In order to generate a DTM, measurements from nonground features such as buildings, vehicles, and vegetation have to be classified and removed. In this paper, a progressive morphological filter was developed to detect nonground LIDAR measurements. By gradually increasing the window size of the filter and using elevation difference thresholds, the measurements of vehicles, vegetation, and buildings are removed, while ground data are preserved. Datasets from mountainous and flat urbanized areas were selected to test the progressive morphological filter. The results show that the filter can remove most of the nonground points effectively. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper revisits the basic mathematical formulation of orthoimage (digital orthophoto) generation. The main objective is to provide an approach for predicting the accuracy of an orthoimage, according to the accuracy of the digital elevation model (DEM), control points and image measurements, the configuration of fiducial, tie and control points, and the ground slope. The approach is based on applying the wellknown law of error propagation to the mathematical model of orthoimage generation. Although it may seem intuitive for professionals in the field of photogrammetry, such an approach is essential in the era when specialists in other fields use offtheshelf software packages for orthoimage generation. Simulations with the derived approach show that the accuracy of the orthoimage is more sensitive to errors in image measurement of fiducial, tie and control points and ground coordinates of control points, than to DEM errors. Nonstandard configurations of fiducial, tie and control points further impair the accuracy. In addition, certain combinations of point location and ground slope might lead to unacceptably large error on the orthoimage. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) We present a multiresolution model for terrain surfaces which is able to handle large-scale global topographic. It is based on a hierarchical decomposition of the sphere by a recursive bisection triangulation in geographic coordinates. Error indicators allow the representation of the data at various levels of detail and enable data compression by local omission of data values. The resulting adaptive hierarchical triangulation is stored using a bit code of the underlying binary tree and additionally, relative pointers which allow a selective tree traversal. This way, it is possible to work directly on the compressed data. We show that significant compression rates can be obtained already for small threshold values. In a visualization application, adaptive triangulations which consist of hundreds of thousands of shaded triangles are extracted and drawn at interactive rates. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) The standard method of building compact triangulated surface approximations to terrain surfaces (TINs) from dense digital elevation models (DEMs) adds points to an initial sparse triangulation or removes points from a dense initial mesh. Typically, in each triangle in the current TIN, the worst fitting point, in terms of vertical distance, is selected. The order of insertion of the points is determined by the magnitude of the maximum vertical difference. This measure produces triangulations that minimize the maximum vertical distance between the TIN and the source DEM. Other approximation criteria are often used, however, including the rootmeansquared error or the mean absolute error, both for the vertical difference and normal difference, i.e., the distance in the direction of the normal to the triangular approximation. For these approximation criteria, we still select the worst fit point, but determine the insertion order by various sums of' errors over the triangle. Experiments show that using these better evaluation measures significantly reduces the size of the TIN for a given approximation error. [Termes IGN] SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) For 11 days in february 2000, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) successfully recorded by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data of the entire land mass of the earth between 60° N and 57° S. The data acquired in C-and X-bands are processed into the first global elevation models (DEMs) at 1 arc sec resolution, by NASA-JPL and German aerospace center (DLR), respectively. From the perspective of the STRM-X system, we give in this paper an overview of the mission and the DEM production, as well as an evaluation of the DEM product quality. Special emphasis is on challenges and peculiarities of the processing that arose from the unique designn of the STRM system, which has been the first single-pass interferometer in space.
