[Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (auteur) We proposed a new area-based approach to process Lidar point clouds and develop new sets of metrics to improve models dedicated to predict forest parameters. First, we introduced point normalization based on penetration depth below the outer canopy layer to avoid biases introduced by ground normalization and canopy surface heterogeneity during metric computation. Second, we proposed computation of area and volume metrics from canopy surface models computed from both first and last returns to better characterize the 3D plot heterogeneity. The set of proposed metrics were combined with traditional ones, based on point height above ground level, to measure their contribution to models of basal area (BA) and aboveground volume (AGV). The modeling framework included a wide range of forest types, canopy structures and Lidar characteristics. Models were developed for all sites grouped together or separately. In each case, the set of metrics was submitted to a hierarchical clustering process to select the best variables to be included in the models that were further established using a best-subset method. Overall, the introduction of the proposed metrics allowed a reduction in models root mean squared error from − 0.06% to 19.58% according to forest types and target forest parameters. Best improvements were achieved for broadleaved forests, showing the potential of the proposed metrics to efficiently characterize the structure of such porous forest canopies. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (éditeur) UAS photogrammetry has been used to create a printed 3D model of the area around Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, U.K. The model is on display in the new visitor centre at the castle. Vertical images were taken with a fixed wing and oblique images with a multirotor. Data capture faced two major challenges: the weather and steeply rising cliffs. Working in the winter, in windy and gloomy conditions, proved tricky for obtaining sharp and vivid images so the use of high-quality cameras was a must. In contrast, the legal limitations were modest. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Auteur) Given a picture taken somewhere in the world, automatic geo-localization of such an image is an extremely useful task especially for historical and forensic sciences, documentation purposes, organization of the world’s photographs and intelligence applications. While tremendous progress has been made over the last years in visual location recognition within a single city, localization in natural environments is much more difficult, since vegetation, illumination, seasonal changes make appearance-only approaches impractical. In this work, we target mountainous terrain and use digital elevation models to extract representations for fast visual database lookup. We propose an automated approach for very large scale visual localization that can efficiently exploit visual information (contours) and geometric constraints (consistent orientation) at the same time. We validate the system at the scale of Switzerland (40,000 km2) using over 1000 landscape query images with ground truth GPS position. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The recognition and delineation of hydrological stream lines has, traditionally, been a subjective manual task in cartography. However, digital elevation models (DEMs) are nowadays often employed to extract stream lines automatically, via the use of geographic information systems. Whereas the automatic generation of hydrological networks presents errors, their manual recognition can be almost arbitrary. In this paper, we propose a methodology with which to label potentially sensitive zones in the comparison of hydrological cartographic networks. Two different sources were analyzed: a conventional cartographic stream network, and one automatically extracted from a DEM. The 72 500 vectors of displacement, representing the spatial disagreement (or fit) between the stream networks, were also examined. A number of remarkable distributions of large errors were identified that were a cause for alarm; these errors are here denoted by “warnings” and are classified into six different groups. The displacement vectors were also analyzed in terms of modulus and azimuth, thereby allowing the analysis of the isotropy of the spatial displacements. We propose the use of all of the derived information as metadata for hydrological spatial quality, as well as the extension of the methodology to any other type of cartographic element (roads, cadastral, etc.) for which two different vector format information sources are compared.
