[Termes IGN] routeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses a data structure specification for route directions that incorporates essential aspects of cognitive information processing. Specifically, we characterize levels of granularity in route directions as the result of the hierarchical organization of urban spatial knowledge. We discuss changes of granularity in route directions that result from combining elementary route information into higher-order elements (so called spatial chunking). We provide a framework that captures the pertinent aspects of spatial chunking. The framework is based on established principles used—from a cognitive perspective—for changing the granularity in route directions. The data structure we specify based on this framework allows us to bridge the gap between results from behavioral cognitive science studies and requirements of information systems. We discuss the theoretical underpinning of the core elements of the data structure and provide examples for its application. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) Comprehensive and accurate information on the conditions of the road infrastructure is essential for effective management and planning of the road network, especially in cities facing serious traffic congestion problems, as in the city of Istanbul, Turkey. One of the most important services of the local authorities is the rehabilitation of road surfaces. Asphalt resurfacing is carried out to renew the road surface and restore its resistance to weathered and traffic worn pavements. Today, the determination of pavement surface conditions is usually carried out through visual inspections by the experts and interpretation of in situ photographs/videos. In this study, an investigation has been made to understand the spectral behaviour of the asphalt in terms of its contents and age, also to discover the feasibility of using widely available satellite sensors in the determination of road surface conditions. Two datasets in the study area from D-100 road and TEM highway were used to examine asphalt road aging and deterioration. The changes to the conditions of the roads were detected using multispectral IKONOS images and ground spectral measurements for asphalt samples were obtained using an Analytical Spectral Devices full range (ASD FR) instrument in a laboratory environment. It was found that the road deformations mainly occur in areas where vehicles reduce or increase their speeds suddenly. Road sections just before toll booths and junctions are found to be more prone to deformations. IKONOS images can be effectively used to determine the condition of the asphalt pixels. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) An automated method for 3D modelling of complex highway interchanges is presented. Laser data and 2D topographic map data have been combined in an innovative 3D reconstruction procedure. Complex situations as shown in this paper demand knowledge to guide the automatic reconstruction. This knowledge has been used in the fusion procedure to constrain the topological and geometrical properties of the reconstructed 3D model. These additions are needed to take care of the lack of data in occluded areas. Laser data has been segmented and filtered before it is fused with map data. In the surface-growing algorithm combining map and laser points, the laser data is assigned to the corresponding road element. Although results are shown using two specific data sources, the algorithm is designed to be capable of dealing with any polygon-based topographic map and any aerial laser scanner data-set. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The problem of identifying the shortest path along a road network is a fundamental problem in network analysis, ranging from route guidance in a navigation system to solving spatial allocation problems. Since this type of problem is solved so frequently, it is important to craft an approach that is as efficient as possible. Based upon past research, it is generally accepted that several efficient implementations of the Dijkstra algorithm are the fastest at optimally solving the 'one-to-one' shortest path problem (Cherkassky et al. 1996). We show that the most efficient state-of-the-art implementations of Dijkstra can be improved by taking advantage of network properties associated with GIS-sourced data. The results of this paper, derived from tests of different algorithmic approaches on real road networks, will be extremely valuable for application developers and researchers in the GIS community.
