[Termes IGN] système de gestion de base de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) With the proliferation of mobile computing, the ability to index efficiently the movements of mobile objects becomes important. Objects are typically seen as moving in two-dimensional (x, y) space, which means that their movements across time may be embedded in the three-dimensional (x, y, t) space. Further, the movements are typically represented as trajectories, sequences of connected line segments. In certain cases, movement is restricted; specifically, in this paper, we aim at exploiting that movements occur in transportation networks to reduce the dimensionality of the data. Briefly, the idea is to reduce movements to occur in one spatial dimension. As a consequence, the movement occurs in two-dimensional (x, t) space. The advantages of considering such lower-dimensional trajectories are that the overall size of the data is reduced and that lower-dimensional data is to be indexed. Since off-the-shelf database management systems typically do not offer higher-dimensional indexing, this reduction in dimensionality allows us to use existing DBMSes to store and index trajectories. Moreover, we argue that, given the right circumstances, indexing these dimensionality-reduced trajectories can be more efficient than using a three-dimensional index. A decisive factor here is the fractal dimension of the network-the lower, the more efficient is the proposed approach. This hypothesis is verified by an experimental study that incorporates trajectories stemming from real and synthetic road networks. [Termes IGN] routeRésumé : (Auteur) We present results of an analysis of deforestation at a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Parque National Yasuni, located in the rainforests of eastern Ecuador using multitemporal Landsat TM and ETM+ satellite imagery. Using survival analysis, we assessed both current and future trends in deforestation rates, and investigated the impact of spatial, cultural, and economic factors on deforestation. These factors included the distance from roads, rivers research facilities, oil facilities, markets and towns, and land ownership by colonists, native inhabitants, and an oil company. We found the annual rate of deforestation is currently only 0.11%, but that this rate is increasing with time and, assuming that the trend of increasing rate of forest loss continues, we would predict that by 2063, 50% of the forest within 2 km of an oil access road will be lost to unhindered colonization and anthropogenic conversion. The Quechua colonists are associated with areas of the highest rate of deforestation, followed by the native Huaorani and the lowest region of deforestation was in areas occupied by a local oil company. By far, the strongest predictor of where deforestation is predicted to occur was proximity to the road. Proximity to research sites, oil facilities, market, and rivers significantly decreases deforestation rates, and proximity to towns significantly increases deforestation rates. [Termes IGN] Web Feature ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Current data sharing in the Internet environment is supported using metadata at the file level. This approach has three fundamental shortcomings. First, sharing data from different sources with different semantics, data models, and acquisition methods usually requires data conversion and/or integration like data conflation. This can be tedious and error-prone. Second, data updated from one source cannot be automatically propagated to other related data or applications. Finally, data sharing at the file level makes it difficult to provide feature-level data for searching, accessing, and exchanging in real time over the Internet. This paper addresses these three issues by proposing a standards-based framework for sharing geospatial data in the transportation application domain. The proposed framework uses a standard data model-geospatial data model proposed by the Geospatial One-Stop initiative to harmonize the semantics and data models without the use of data integration methods. It uses Geography Markup Language (GML) for geospatial data coding and feature relationship, which provides a basis to propagate the data update from one source to related other sources and applications, and to search and extract data at the feature level. The framework uses the Web Feature Service (WFS) to search, access and extract data at the feature level from distributed sources. Finally, the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard was used for data display on the Web browser. Two transportation network datasets are used in the prototype case study to implement the proposed framework. The prototype allows the user to access and extract data at the feature level on the Web from distributed sources without downloading the full data file. It shows that the proposed standards-based feature-level data-sharing system is capable of sharing data without data conflation, accessing, and exchanging data in real time at the feature level. The prototype also shows that changes in one database can be automatically reflected or propagated in another related database without data downloading. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (Auteur) Stop signs and speed limit signs (SLS) are the most popular and significant traffic signs on roadways. Unlike extracting stop signs with a distinct red color, extracting SLS in a realtime environment is much more challenging. This paper presents an algorithm for recognizing SLS from video imaging and extracting the numerical numbers of SLS to support real-time road inventory data collection operations. The algorithm consists of color segmentation based on locally adaptive thresholding extraction of regions of interest (ROI) using a depth-first-search algorithm, followed by speed limit sign detection and speed limit number extraction by means of optical character recognition and 2D correlation. The algorithm was implemented in Visual C++ language and tested on a non-Hyper-Threading Pentium IV PC with 3.06GHZ CPU using the images taken in the field with different image sizes. The average processing time for an image of 1200 X 800 pixels is about 125 ms. Experimental results from 1,401 video images show 0 percent false positives out of 1,278 images containing no SLS, and 3 percent false negatives out of 123 images containing SLS.
