[Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (Auteur) Large concentrations of herbicide were sprayed onto the forests of southern Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s. Over 30 years later, many of these contaminated forests have regained full canopy cover, albeit with reduced chlorophyll content. The European Space Agency produces an operational product for the estimation of terrestrial chlorophyll content over large areas of terrain. This product uses data recorded by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on Envisat and is called the MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI). The relationship between historical levels of herbicide contamination and contemporary MTCI was strong (R = 0.86) and negative, with high levels of herbicide contamination being associated (via low levels of chlorophyll concentration) with low levels of MTCI. This is the first published study to demonstrate a relationship between MTCI and a surrogate for chlorophyll content. The next stage of this research is to build on the strength of this relationship and use contemporary MTCI to estimate historical herbicide levels during the 1960s and 1970s across southern Vietnam. Scenario 1 eliminated differences due to illumination, viewing, and FOV conditions. Scenario 2 represented a ‘typical’ illumination and viewing set-up for each instrument. Six vegetation indices were computed from the raw spectra as well as spectra (1) interpolated to 1-nm intervals (the sampling interval of the FR) and (2) interpolated to 3.3 nm (the sampling interval of the UN). The spectra measured from the three instruments differed in both shape and amplitude, more so for scenario 2 than scenario 1. In many cases, indices obtained using one instrument differed significantly from the same indices obtained using the other two instruments (but the same leaves), regardless of scenario. The severity of these differences varied between indices. Interpolation was generally ineffective in ‘matching’ the spectra from the various instruments. Care should be exercised when comparing indices generated from spectra measured from different instruments. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Using simple models derived from spectral reflectance, we mapped the patterns of ecosystem CO2 and water fluxes in a semi-arid site in southern California during a period of extreme disturbance, marked by drought and fire. Employing a combination of low (not, vert, similar 2 km) and high (not, vert, similar 16 km) altitude images from the hyperspectral Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS), acquired between April 2002 and September 2003, and ground data collected from an automated tram system, several vegetation indices were calculated for Sky Oaks field station, a FLUXNET and SpecNet site located in northern San Diego County (CA, USA). Based on the relationships observed between the fluxes measured by the eddy covariance tower and the vegetation indices, net CO2 and water vapor flux maps were derived for the region around the flux tower. Despite differences in the scale of the images (from not, vert, similar 2 m to 16 m pixel size) as well as marked differences in environmental conditions (drought in 2002, recovery in early 2003, and fire in mid 2003), net CO2 and water flux modeled from AVIRIS-derived reflectance indices (NDVI, PRI and WBI) effectively tracked changes in tower fluxes across both drought and fire, and readily revealed spatial variation in fluxes within this landscape. After an initial period of net carbon uptake, drought and fire caused the ecosystem to lose carbon to the atmosphere during most of the study period. Our study shows the power of integrating optical and flux data in LUE models to better understand factors driving surface-atmosphere carbon and water vapor flux cycles, one of the main goals of SpecNet. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) The imaginary component of the complex index of refraction denotes the attenuation of E-M waves in amplitude within the procedure of propagation in a medium. The attenuation of E-M waves in sea water is of great importance in microwave remote sensing, because the Snell's law of refraction in air–sea interface, sea surface reflectivity, sea surface emissivity and the estimation of sea surface temperature (SST) from microwave radiometer detections are all related to it. The well-known expressions of the reflectivity were derived in optics, but they cannot be applied directly to microwave remote sensing, since the E-M waves of microwave bands propagating in the sea water are greatly attenuated. In this study, a more appropriate formula of the reflectivity is proposed for the full range of E-M waves with considering the attenuation of E-M waves in the sea water. The proposed formula can be used to obtain the emissivity of sea surface, which is useful to estimate SST in microwave remote sensing. The error analysis indicates further that the proposed formula of the reflectivity is significant for improving ocean microwave remote sensing and increasing the retrieval accuracy of SST.
