[Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This research was designed to evaluate the operational utility of airborne video for classification accuracy assessment of satellite imagery. There are a number of logistical advantages in utilizing airborne video data particularly in remote or large catchment regions where ground accessibility can be prohibitively expensive. In a study of land cover characteristics in the Barossa Valley, South Australia comparisons of Landsat ETM+ classification accuracy assessments were derived from both airborne video and standard ground truthing point sampling techniques. The airborne video data was obtained by randomly frame grabbing 243 individual scenes along four predetermined flight lines and computing classification accuracies and error matrix statistics. These results were then compared with similar statistics derive ' dfirom 180 randomly chosen ground sampling sites. The costs involved in obtaining both sets of data per sampling point were also calculated. The results demonstrated that the airborne video data provided similar degrees of accuracy assessment at a cost of approximately one seventh that of the ground survey with the added advantages of increased data collection, overall improved site accessibility and the ability to continually store and review the data. The cost differentiation would become even more pronounced in more remote and inaccessible areas. In general the results of the unsupervised Landsat ETM+ classification were rather poor producing an overall general accuracy of 70% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.65, highlighting the classification difficulties encountered in using commercial satellite imagery for land cover assessments in an area with very heterogeneous fine grained land use patterns. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The urban environment is characterized by an intense multifunctional use of available spaces, where the preservation of open green spaces is of special importance. For this purpose, areawide urban biotope mapping based on CIR aerial photographs has been carried out for the large cities in Germany during the last 10 years. Because of dynamic urban development and high mapping costs, the municipal authorities are interested in effective methods for mapping urban surface cover types, which can be used for evaluation of ecological conditions in urban structures and supporting updates of biotope maps. Against this background, airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data of the DAIS 7915 instrument have been analyzed for a test site in the city of Dresden (Germany) with regard to their potential for automated materialoriented identification of urban surface cover types. Previous investigations have shown that the high spectral and spatial variabilities of these data require the development of special methods, which are capable of dealing with the resulting mixedpixel problem in its specific characteristics in urban areas. Earlier, methodological developments led to an approach based on a combination of spectral classification and pixeloriented unmixing techniques to facilitate sensible endmember selection based on the reflective bands of the DAIS instrument. This approach is now extended by a shapebased classification technique including the thermal bands of the DAIS instrument to improve the detection of buildings during the process of identifying seedling pixels, which represent the starting points for linear spectral unmixing. This new approach increases the reliability of differentiation between buildings and open spaces, leading to more accurate results for the spatial distribution of surface cover types. Thus, the new approach significantly enhances the exploitation of the information potential of the hyperspectral DAIS 7915 data for an areawide identification of urban surface cover types. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Multiple satellite sensors are used to analyze physical processes that determine energy fluxes and their interaction at the urban surface. The study is based on summertime microclimate analyses of the Los Angeles and Paris metropolises. The method consists of deriving some parameters governing the surface heat fluxes, constructing statistics of thermal infrared images, and using a GIS to combine them with a landcover classification from SPOTHRV multispectral images, and with data from intensive insitu experiments. The average images reveal spatial and temporal variations of land surface temperature (LST), and distinct microclimatic patterns. The combined interpretation of the statistics images and of the landcover classification shows: (i) the effect of surface physical properties, especially in downtown business and industrial districts that display heatislands larger than 7°C; (ii) the temperating influence of water; (iii) the negative correlation between afternoon land surface temperature and normalized vegetation index, which confirms the cooling effect of urban parks; (iv) the correlation between variations of surface temperature and ozone concentration at diurnal and longer time scales. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we evaluate the potential of a frequency-based contextual classifier (FBC) for landuse classification with a panchromatic Ikonos image. To capture the spatial arrangement of image graylevel values and use such information in image classification, we applied texture spectrum (TS) directly in the FBC. The effects of several data preprocessing and reduction methods on the performance of the FBC are also evaluated. The methods include four graylevel reduction (GLR) techniques and several modifications to the TS technique. The purpose of data reduction is to improve the classification efficiency of the FBC. The GLR schemes were minmax linear compression (LC), gray level binning (BN), histogram equalization (HE), and piecewise nonlinear compression (PC). Instead of using the texture measures derived from the texture spectrum, we directly applied texture spectra of various sizes in the classification. We modified the encoding algorithm in the TS and were able to reduce the number of texture units from its original 6561 to 256, 81, and 16, leading to as much as a 410 times computation efficiency. The original image and GLR images were subsequently classified with the FBC. We compared the classification accuracies and found that the GLR methods resulted in accuracies similar to that of the original image (within 0.03 kappa value). There was little difference in classification accuracy (within 0.03 kappa value) among the three modified TS methods, which were all outperformed by the original TS method. All TS methods performed considerably better than the use of the original image and the GLR methods. [Termes IGN] transformation de FourierRésumé : (Auteur) Recent papers have described 18year trends and interannual oscillations in the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice extents, areas, and enclosed open water areas based on newly formulated 18.2year ice concentration time series. They were obtained by finetuning the sea ice algorithm tie points individually for each of the four sensors used to acquire the data. In this paper, these analyses are extended to an examination of the intrinsic modes of these time series, obtained by means of empirical mode decomposition, which handles both nonstationary and nonlinear data as found in these time series, unlike filtering techniques based on Fourier analysis. Our analysis centers on periodicities greater than one year. Quasibiennial and quasiquadrennial oscillations similar to those observed earlier with a multitaperfiltered Fourier analysis technique were also observed here. The intrinsic modes described here feature frequency as well as amplitude modulation within their respective frequency bands. The slowest varying mode in the Antarctic sea ice cover has slightly less than a full period during this 18.2year time period, but the change in sign of its curvature hints at a modal period of about 19 years, with important implications for the trend analyses published earlier.
