[Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (auteur) We present here the results of a water and nutrient manipulation experiment in a five-year-old plantation of maritime pine in south-western France. $\bullet$ Water and nutrient levels were manipulated in a factorial design with two levels of irrigation (control receiving only rainfall (C) and irrigated (I)) and three levels of fertilisation (control with no added nutrients (C), P-only (P) and annual addition of a complete nutrient mix (F)) in order to quantify growth limitations of plantation forest in this particular area. The treatments applied during five years increased aboveground biomass annual increment by 4% (I) to 58% (IF) with respect to the control (C). The fertilised plots had a slightly non-significant lower root-to-shoot ratio. The effect of irrigation was maximal in 2002, resulting in 6%, 7% and 12% higher growth rate on the F, C and P plots, respectively. A windstorm disturbed the experiment in 1999 and has affected preferentially the fertilised plots, with IF plots displaying 60% damage. The higher growth rate of fertilised and irrigated plots was attributed to both an increase (estimated at 5 to 15%) in the amount of light absorbed by the canopy, and an increase (estimated at 26% for IF plots) in the amount of above-ground biomass produced annually per unit leaf area. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) The objectives of this research were: (1) to quantify indicators of riparian condition; and (2) to assess these indicators for detecting change in riparian condition. Two multi-spectral QuickBird images were acquired in 2004 and 2005 for a section of the Daly River in north Australia. These data were collected coincidently with vegetation and geomorphic field data. Indicators of riparian condition, including percentage canopy cover, organic litter, canopy continuity, bank stability, flood damage, riparian zone width and vegetation overhang, were then mapped. Field measurements and vegetation indices were empirically related using regression analysis to develop algorithms for mapping organic litter and canopy cover (R 2 = 0.59-0.78). Using a standard nearest-neighbour algorithm, object-oriented supervised image classification provided thematic information (overall accuracies 81-90%) for mapping riparian zone width and vegetation overhang. Bank stability and flood damage were mapped empirically from a combination of canopy cover information and the image classification products (R 2 = 0.70-0.81). Multi-temporal image analysis of riparian condition indicators (RCIs) demonstrated the advantages of using continuous and discrete data values as opposed to categorical data. This research demonstrates how remote sensing can be used for mapping and monitoring riparian zones in remote tropical savannas and other riparian environments at scales from 1 km to 100s km of stream length. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) was launched in January 2006, and this made it possible for the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) to acquire high-resolution images (2,5 m) from the satellite's sensor PRISM (Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping). It is expected that PRISM will be applied to the mapping and revision of 1:25 000-scale topographic maps. In collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), GSI has finished verifying and demonstrating the feasability of PRISM images for mapping and revision of 1:25 000-scale topographic maps, and has started using the images in its mapping program. This report describes this feasability study and details the actual applications of PRISM images for topographic mapping.
