[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The rapid expansion of human settlement, agricultural land and roads because of population growth in several regions of the world has contributed to the depletion of forest land. In this study, novel ensemble intelligent approaches using bagging, dagging and rotation forest (RTF) as meta classifiers of multilayer perceptron (MLP) were used to predict spatial deforestation probability (DP) in Gumani Basin, India. The success rate and correctness of prediction of the ensemble models were compared with MLP. A total of 1000 deforested pixels and 14 deforestation determining factors (DDFs) were used. The ensemble models were trained using 70% of the deforested pixels and validated with the remaining 30%. DDFs were chosen by applying the information gain ratio and Relief-F test methods. Distance to settlement, population growth and distance to roads were the most important factors. The results of DP modelling demonstrated that nearly 16.82%–12.64% of the basin had very high DP. All four models created DP maps with reasonable prediction accuracy and goodness of fit, but the best map was produced by MLP-bagging. The accuracy of the MLP neural net model was increased 2-3% after ensemble with the hybrid meta classifiers (RTF, bagging and dagging). The proposed method could be used for deforestation prediction in other areas having similar geo-environmental conditions. Furthermore, the findings might be used as a basis for future research and could help planners in forest management. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (éditeur) Natural hazard events are able to significantly affect the natural and artificial environment. In this context, changes in landforms due to natural disasters have the potential to affect and, in some cases, even restrict human interaction with the ecosystem. In order to minimize fatalities and reduce the economic impact that accompanies their occurrence, proper planning is crucial. Land use planning can play an important role in reducing current and future risks related to natural hazards. Land use changes can lead to natural hazards and vice versa: natural hazards affect land uses. Therefore, planners may take into account areas that are susceptible to natural hazards when selecting favorable locations for land use development. Appropriate land use planning can lead to the determination of safe and non-safe areas for urban activities. This Special Issue focuses on land use planning for natural hazards. In this context, various types of natural hazards, such as land degradation and desertification, coastal hazard, floods, and landslides, as well as their interactions with human activities, are presented. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Land Use (LU) mapping and monitoring at fine spatial and temporal resolutions requires many efforts. Remote-sensing based change detection approaches exist (Lu et al., 2014), though use is not trivial and not necessarily related to cover. Considerable interest has then emerged in using Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) (Goodchild, 2007) as an alternative source of data (Fonte et al., 2013; Fritz et al., 2015). The goal of this paper is to discuss the lessons learned from a VGI data collection initiative which have aimed to collect change and local LU observations (i.e. quarry activity, usage and number of floors of a building, construction in progress) for updating and enriching authoritative LU data. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Several studies have shown that global changes have important impacts in mountainous areas, since they affect natural hazards induced by hydrometeorological events such as landslides. The present study evaluates, through an innovative method, the influence of both vegetation cover and climate change on landslide hazards in a Pyrenean valley from the present to 2100. We first focused on assessing future land use and land cover changes through the construction of four prospective socioeconomic scenarios and their projection to 2040 and 2100. Secondly, climate change parameters were used to extract the water saturation of the uppermost layers, according to two greenhouse gas emission scenarios. The impacts of land cover and climate change based on these scenarios were then used to modulate the hydromechanical model to compute the factor of safety (FoS) and the hazard levels over the considered area. The results demonstrate the influence of land cover on slope stability through the presence and type of forest. The resulting changes are statistically significant but small and dependent on future land cover linked to the socioeconomic scenarios. In particular, a reduction in human activity results in an increase in slope stability; in contrast, an increase in anthropic activity leads to an opposite evolution in the region, with some reduction in slope stability. Climate change may also have a significant impact in some areas because of the increase in the soil water content; the results indicate a reduction in the FoS in a large part of the study area, depending on the landslide type considered. Therefore, even if future forest growth leads to slope stabilization, the evolution of the groundwater conditions will lead to destabilization. The increasing rate of areas prone to landslides is higher for the shallow landslide type than for the deep landslide type. Interestingly, the evolution of extreme events is related to the frequency of the highest water filling ratio. The results indicate that the occurrences of landslide hazards in the near future (2021–2050 period, scenario RCP8.5) and far future (2071–2100 period, scenario RCP8.5) are expected to increase by factors of 1.5 and 4, respectively.
