[Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) A massive earthquake of Mw = 7.3 struck the western Himalaya on 8 October 2005 at 03:50:40 (UTC) causing widespread damage to property and lives. This earthquake is the result of thrusting of the Indian plate under the Eurasian plate. It is one of the deadliest earthquakes in South Asia in recent times. The recently launched Indian remote sensing satellite Cartosat–1, providing 2.5 m panchromatic along-track stereoscopic data have been analysed for damage assessment along with Resourcesat–1 multispectral data for understanding the regional tectonics. In this study, nearly 25% of the buildings are identified as fully collapsed in Uri and Punch region of the Jammu and Kashmir, India. Other damage such as bridge collapse, road blockage owing to landslides etc. is also identified from the satellite data. The coseismic landslides show clear spatial association with the pre-existing faults such as the Jhelum Fault and Main Boundary Thrust (MBT). A new trend in the alignment of landslides is found, which indicates reactivation of a new fault in this region. The effectiveness of the fine resolution stereoscopic satellite data for damage assessment in rugged mountainous terrain is also highlighted in this study. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) The Polochic-Motagua strike-slip fault system in Guatemala marks the on-land plate boundary between the North American (NA) and the Caribbean (CA) plates. GPS observations in 1999 and 2003 show that the far-field velocity across the system (NA-CA relative velocity) is ∼20 mm/yr. This is significantly higher than the NUVEL-1A velocity but is consistent with the GPS based CA-NA velocity proposed by DeMets et al. (2000). The observations are modeled by a fault centered on the Motagua fault, locked at a depth of 20 km, with a slip-rate decreasing from eastern to central Guatemala from 20 to 12 mm/yr towards the NA-CA-Cocos triple junction. This decrease is accommodated by ∼8 mm/yr of E-W extension in the westernmost part of CA south of the Motagua fault. About 10 mm/yr of dextral slip is observed across the Mid-American Volcanic Arc. The NA-CA-Cocos triple junction is thus a complex, ∼400 km-wide wedge-shaped area. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (Auteur) Precise leveling, tide-gauge recordings and time series from continuous GPS stations are all sources of information about the ongoing postglacial land uplift in Fennoscandia. This article describes how to gather these three sources of data together in a least-squares collocation adjustment in order to calculate uplift rates, as well as new heights for the benchmarks in the leveling network. The estimated reliability of the resulting uplift model is in general better than 0.4 mm/year, decreasing in areas of fewer data. [Termes IGN] tectoniqueRésumé : (Auteur) Well-documented geological data (from both field and satellite) in the Deccan Volcanic Provinces (DVP) in and around the Dalvat region, Nasik District, India has been analysed by Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and reported in this paper so as to relate the geology and structures with recent seismicity. It has been the belief among earth scientists that the Deccan Traps in Maharashtra, India is tectonically stable as the region attained solidity long ago. However, recent activity in the study area altered this concept and it is now accepted that seismic activity is still continuing on a mild scale. As such, the need has arisen to take into consideration historical as well as recent geological data to study in detail the tectonic setup in the Deccan Traps.
Using the well-known relationship between the shear zone, lineaments, and geomorphology, and incorporating these with tectonic events, an attempt has been made to explore the geology and structures in and around the Dalvat region. Field observations and signatures on remote sensing data show that there is evidence of fault traces in the form of shear zones and slickensides in the Deccan Traps near the Kosurde, Dhanoli, Chikhli, and Manchandar villages of the Nasik District. The study has further been incorporated with seismic density data. Magnitudes of 3.9 were recorded as the maximum micro-epicentres, and they fell on the shear fractures detected in the area of study.
In order to identify seismically vulnerable areas, seismic hazard zonation (SHZ) mapping has been carried out. Different data layers, including structural, lithological, geomorphological, drainage, and soil have been visually interpreted, scanned, and rectified. A rose diagram of the lineaments shows trends in the NNE–SSW to NS falling on major seismic zones of the study area, showing weaker zones beneath the surface. Raster images were digitized for conversion to a vector coverage using ERDAS 8.6. and ArcGIS 8.3. The ordinal scale (qualitative) relative weighting rating technique was used to give a seismic hazard index (SHI) value to delineate various seismic hazard zones; namely very low, low, moderate, high, and very high.
