[Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (Auteur) Tectonic faults are often associated with characteristic geomorphological features such as linear valleys, ridgelines and slope breaks that can be identified as lineaments in remotely sensed images or digital terrain models. Lineaments of tectonic origin are often characterised by periodicity and characteristic spatial pattern. Unlike traditional methods of autocorrelation, variogram, lineament density and Fourier analysis, wavelet analysis is capable of capturing and describing both periodicity and spatial pattern of lineaments. In this paper, a case study is shown for the application of wavelet analysis to morphotectonic lineament investigation. Results of wavelet analysis are compared to traditional methods. Although this study involves DEM-derived morphological lineaments, the presented wavelet analysis can be also used for lineaments derived from remotely sensed images. These results hold for this case study and provide a good assessment of the relative abilities of wavelet analysis, but it remains to be seen how effective it is for other data sources, areas and geological terrain. [Termes IGN] Terre (planète)Résumé : (auteur) In the framework of activities of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) Combination Research Centres (CRC), the French Groupe de Recherche en Géodésie Spatiale (GRGS) studies the benefit of combining four geodetic techniques (SLR, VLBI, GPS and DORIS) at the measurement level in order to obtain a global and consistent solution for Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs): polar motion xp and yp, universal time UT and celestial pole offsets in longitude and obliquity dψ and dǫ with a six-hour sampling, as well as weekly station positions. A one-year test period (the year 2002) has been chosen to prove the power of such a combination moreover worked out in a homogeneous global terrestrial reference frame. All techniques were processed in the same computational framework (GINS/DYNAMO) so with the same a priori models and a priori values for parameters. The optimal relative weights between each geodetic technique were obtained with an optimal variance component estimation method. In most cases, sub-centimetre accuracy at the 95% confidence level is required in displacement detection of hundreds of targets. Presently, robotic total stations (RTSs) with automatic target recognition provide the most efficient solution for the monitoring problem. In large open pit mines it may be necessary to place the RTS near the bottom of the pit in unstable conditions without visibility to stable reference points. Extensive testing has been performed in a large open pit mine to evaluate the use of GPS in controlling the stability of the RTSs.
