[Termes IGN] subductionRésumé : (auteur) The GRACE satellite mission has been measuring the Earth's gravity field and its temporal variations since 2002 April. Although these variations are mainly due to mass transfer within the geofluid envelops, they also result from mass displacements associated with phenomena including glacial isostatic adjustment and earthquakes. However, these last contributions are difficult to isolate because of the presence of noise and of geofluid signals, and because of GRACE's coarse spatial resolution (>400 km half-wavelength). In this paper, we show that a wavelet analysis on the sphere helps to retrieve earthquake signatures from GRACE geoid products. Using a wavelet analysis of GRACE geoids products, we show that the geoid variations caused by the 2004 December (Mw = 9.2) and 2005 March (Mw = 8.7) Sumatra earthquakes can be detected. At GRACE resolution, the 2004 December earthquake produced a strong coseismic decrease of the gravity field in the Andaman Sea, followed by relaxation in the area affected by both the Andaman 2004 and the Nias 2005 earthquakes. We find two characteristic timescales for the relaxation, with a fast variation occurring in the vicinity of the Central Andaman ridge. We discuss our coseismic observations in terms of density changes of crustal and upper-mantle rocks, and of the vertical displacements in the Andaman Sea. We interpret the post-seismic signal in terms of the viscoelastic response of the Earth's mantle. The transient component of the relaxation may indicate the presence of hot, viscous material beneath the active Central Andaman Basin. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is a promising recent technique for the generation of digital elevation models and/or the measurement of ground surface deformations. In InSAR data processing, the first step is the image co-registration, achieved by using a set of tie points which are the conjugate image points on the master and slave images. Tie points are selected with the aim of finding the conjugate point automatically on the slave image for any given point on the master image, by the process known as image matching. To achieve reliable matching, a set of points within a window is used instead of a single point. The size of the window will affect the reliability of matching. Hitherto there have been no effective methods for the determination of optimum window size for this purpose. In practice, this parameter is determined by experience. In this paper, a pair of SAR images is used to test the effect of window size on the reliability of co-registration. An optimum window size is selected on the basis of the experimental results. The determination of optimum window size for tie point matching is then examined theoretically, leading to a proposal for an automated method based on the auto-correlation of the SAR images, which reflects the similarity between image pixels. The auto-correlation function is decomposed into waves of various frequencies by a wavelet transform. By a combined analysis of the variations of wave amplitudes with frequency, the optimum window size for tie point matching can be determined. A procedure based on the use of Daubechies wavelet db1 is proposed in detail. An optimum window size could be determined in this way for any pair of SAR images. [Termes IGN] traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes revisions to the Horizontal Time Dependent Positioning (HTDP) software carried out to address the motion associated with two recent California earthquakes. NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) developed HTDP to enable its users to compensate survey measurements for the differential movement associated with tectonic deformation, so that surveys conducted at different epochs may be compared. We focus on the process of selecting and validating models for two recent earthquakes in California, prior to their inclusion in version 2.9 of this software (HTDP v2.9) the Parkfield earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0, which occurred on September 28, 2004, and the San Simeon, California earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5, occurring on December 22, 2003. The process of modeling and correcting for deformation can be well illustrated by utilizing data collected in the vicinity of these earthquakes, because they represent contrasting styles of deformation Parkfield exhibited strike-slip motion and San Simeon wax predominantly a blind-thrust earthquake. Also, while both earthquakes were relatively small, they produced significant displacements (though restricted to a relatively small area in central California). The Parkfield earthquake, in particular, produced an unusually high proportion of post-seismic deformation. This deformation can accumulate during a period of a few months after the earthquake, whereas co-seismic deformation occurs suddenly during an earthquake. Quantifying and characterizing deformation at these disparate time scales represents a major challenge to developing the accurate models of deformation that are required to support modern, high-accuracy surveying in tectonically active areas such as California. This study also confirms the importance of including separate dislocation models of the co-seismic and post-seismic deformation, because, as was the case for Parkfield, post-seismic deformation can be comparable in magnitude to co-seismic deformation. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (Auteur) We have utilized satellite altimetry data to generate the very high-resolution gravity anomaly maps to infer subsurface geological structures in the area of the devastating earthquake (and the corresponding tsunami) that struck the Indian Ocean near Sumatra (Indonesia) on 26 December 2004. In the present study, a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) gravity image has been generated over a part of the eastern Indian offshore encompassing the Sumatran earthquake region apart from Ninety East Ridge, Andaman subduction zone, etc. Four latitudinal (2°, 3°, 4° and 8.6° N) gravity profiles have been generated across the epicentre (3° N/M w 9.0)/aftershock regions (4° N/M w 5.8 and 8.6° N/M w 6.0 and 6.6). A drastic change of gravity anomaly patterns (sim130 mGal) near the epicentre and the aftershock regions could be observed, which are however slowly diminishing further away from the epicentre. This gravitational difference might have been caused by the differences in plate tectonic processes. Minor/major gravitational differences in other areas may be due to the changes in densities of different lithospheric zones/sedimentary layers. Hence, our study further supports the idea that negative gravity and topography anomalies can be used as a predictor for occurrences of large earthquakes in subduction zones. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) We describe a procedure to accurately measure ground deformations from optical satellite images. Precise orthorectification is obtained owing to an optimized model of the imaging system, where look directions are linearly corrected to compensate for attitude drifts, and sensor orientation uncertainties are accounted for. We introduce a new computation of the inverse projection matrices for which a rigorous resampling is proposed. The irregular resampling problem is explicitly addressed to avoid introducing aliasing in the ortho-rectified images. Image registration and correlation is achieved with a new iterative unbiased processor that estimates the phase plane in the Fourier domain for subpixel shift detection. Without using supplementary data, raw images are wrapped onto the digital elevation model and coregistered with a 1/50 pixel accuracy. The procedure applies to images from any pushbroom imaging system. We analyze its performance using Satellite pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) images in the case of a null test (no coseismic deformation) and in the case of large coseismic deformations due to the Mw 7.1 Hector Mine, California, earthquake of 1999. The proposed technique would also allow precise coregistration of images for the measurement of surface displacements due to ice-flow or geomorphic processes, or for any other change detection applications. A complete software package, the Coregistration of Optically Sensed Images and Correlation, is available for download from the Caltech Tectonics Observatory website.
