A colour management system would appear to be essential in order to guarantee high quality of ends products. Such a system allows the operators to make visual quality and representation independent of the production device used, wether this is a monitor, paper or something else. The author describes the implementation of a colour management system at the Portuguese Military Mapping agency and discusses the experience gained there. However, using a large-scale database comprising different formats and coordinate systems is not easy , since coordinate conversion is a complex process. Although today's advanced GIS software has some sort of import/export tool, these remain ineffective when intensive data conversion is required, especially in the case of a user-defined coordinate system. The author discusses a recent study conducted to determine better coordinate conversion parameters for the detroit area, including error considerations. As a result of the study a coordinate conversion program also capable of file conversion was developed. This program converts coordinates among the three coordinate systems of the Detroit areas and calculates conversion parameters. When compared to traditional classroom courses, Web-based courses require appropriate changes in the organisation of the course, contacts with students and maintenance. Care must be taken that too much emphasis upon technology does not overwhelm the didactic aspects of education. Nevertheless, it remains to closely follow technology and incorporate it in creative, innovative, and useful ways. For example, mobile Internet may offer interesting possibilities for the future. The authors describe the UNIGIS network, its target group and strategies. Futher, attention is given to didactic and technical experience of distance and Web-based learning.
