One of the questions the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Canada wanted to get an answer to was whether LIDAR could provide accuracy similar to that of the photogrammetric mapping products normally produced. In the authors' experience, the answer was negative. However, they discuss the fact that LIDAR offers some distinct advantages, such as speed of DTM generation and higher point density under canopy which can, under certain conditions, result in a superior DTM. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The automation of feature extraction from digital imagery is the most challenging task facing those working today in photogrammetry research and development. Unsolved so far is the fully automatic and reliable detection and reconstruction of objects. There are solutions available for the automation of specific tasks under certain restrictions, but all methods show deficiencies when faced with poor image quality. Occlusions and shadows are factors which frequently prevent high success rates. One current practice involves a semiautomatic approach, a human operator being employed for the extremely difficult interpretation tasks. The authors present an overview of inJECT, a semiautomatic building extraction system. This system, developed by INPHO in cooperation with the Institute of Photogrammetry at the University of Bonn, offers a set of building primitives covering the most common basic house shapes. Automated modules assist the human operator in the measuring phase. The system does not require stereo viewing and operators need only a short course of training.
