Last winter, a russian team returned to the birthplace of precision surveying and unearthed startling evidence of a heretofore unknown complex, by feeding elevation data from a kinematic GPS survey into a mapping graphics software program. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) Georeferenced highresolution satellite images can be used for acquisition of topographic information, navigation and visualisation for various environmental studies. The present study is part of the multidisciplinary EU project GEOWARN related to monitoring, warning and emergency planning for volcanic hazards in the island of Nisyros, Greece. Here, the main aim was the orthorectification of a 1m resolution pansharpened IKONOS Geo image of Nisyros island. For the orthorectification, a digital elevation model (DEM) with a cell size of 2 m and an RMS accuracy of ca. 3.5 m was used, as well as 38 selected ground control points (GCPs) measured with differential GPS. An objecttopixel space transformation using the ground control points was computed using two different models, a reliefcorrected affine transformation and the polynomial mapping functions of Kratky. These transformations were used for orthorectification and the orthopboto accuracy was evaluated using GCPs as check points. Postprocessing for radiometric improvement of the orthophotos was applied. The ortbophoto and the DEM served as basic tools for subsequent base mapping and visualisation. [Termes IGN] secours d'urgenceRésumé : (Auteur) Integrating a GPS reveiver with an inertial measurement unit, a barometer, and step-length algorithms, Swiss researchers have extended pedestrian navigation to urban canyons and indoors. The module applies pattern recognition to accelerometer signals, determining a user's step "signature". This can aid blind people in reaching unfamiliar locations and enable emergency coordinators to track rescue workers through chaotic conditions. This shift has reduced the data collection time and begun to provide timelier information that engineers can use to better mitigate any deformation effects. [Termes IGN] transportRésumé : (Auteur) The distinctive data management needs of transportation agencies in developing transportation-based applications dictate the presence of essential elements that are beyond existing transportation location referencing system data models. These elements include multidimensional location referencing, multiscale representation, navigation, and temporal GIS. This paper looks at the foundation for these elements, describes the characteristics of these elements and offers solutions through a transportation-based multi dimensional data model. By managing data expressed in one to four dimensions, the Multi Dimensional Location Referencing System (MDLRS) data model allows organizations to implement improved solutions for transportation systems using advanced spatial technologies (e.g. GPS).
