[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (auteur) LiDAR full-waveform (LFW) pulse density is not homogeneous along study areas due to overlap between contiguous flight stripes and, to a lesser extent, variations in height, velocity and altitude of the platform. As a result, LFW-derived metrics extracted at the same spot but at different pulse densities differ, which is called “side-lap effect”. Moreover, this effect is reflected in forest stand estimates, since they are predicted from LFW-derived metrics. This study was undertaken to analyze LFW-derived metric variations according to pulse density, voxel size and value assignation method in order to reduce the side-lap effect. Thirty LiDAR samples with a minimum density of 16 pulses.m−2 were selected from the testing area and randomly reduced to 2 pulses.m−2 with an interval of 1 pulse.m−2, then metrics were extracted and compared for each sample and pulse density at different voxel sizes and assignation values. Results show that LFW-derived metric variations as a function of pulse density follow a negative exponential model similar to the exponential semivariogram curve, increasing sharply until they reach a certain pulse density, where they become stable. This value represents the minimum pulse density (MPD) in the study area to optimally minimize the side-lap effect. This effect can also be reduced with pulse densities lower than the MPD modifying LFW parameters (i.e. voxel size and assignation value). Results show that LFW-derived metrics are not equally influenced by pulse density, such as number of peaks (NP) and ROUGHness of the outermost canopy (ROUGH) that may be discarded for further analyses at large voxel sizes, given that they are highly influenced by pulse density. In addition, side-lap effect can be reduced by either increasing pulse density or voxel size, or modifying the assignation value. In practice, this leads to a proper estimate of forest stand variables using LFW data. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) We have investigated calibration variations in the Rameau water vapor Raman lidar. This lidar system was developed by the Institut National de l'Information Géographique et Forestière (IGN) together with the Laboratoire Atmosphères, Milieux, Observations Spatiales (LATMOS). It aims at calibrating Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements for tropospheric wet delays and sounding the water vapor variability in the lower troposphere. The Rameau system demonstrated good capacity in retrieving water vapor mixing ratio (WVMR) profiles accurately in several campaigns. However, systematic short-term and long-term variations in the lidar calibration factor pointed to persistent instabilities. A careful testing of each subsystem independently revealed that these instabilities are mainly induced by mode fluctuations in the optic fiber used to couple the telescope to the detection subsystem and by the spatial nonuniformity of the photomultiplier photocathodes. Laboratory tests that replicate and quantify these instability sources are presented. A redesign of the detection subsystem is presented, which, combined with careful alignment procedures, is shown to significantly reduce the instabilities. Outdoor measurements were performed over a period of 5 months to check the stability of the modified lidar system. The calibration changes in the detection subsystem were monitored with lidar profile measurements using a common nitrogen filter in both Raman channels. A short-term stability of 2–3 % and a long-term drift of 2–3 % per month are demonstrated. Compared to the earlier Development of Methodologies for Water Vapour Measurement (DEMEVAP) campaign, this is a 3-fold improvement in the long-term stability of the detection subsystem. The overall water vapor calibration factors were determined and monitored with capacitive humidity sensor measurements and with GPS zenith wet delay (ZWD) data. The changes in the water vapor calibration factors are shown to be fairly consistent with the changes in the nitrogen calibration factors. The nitrogen calibration results can be used to correct the overall calibration factors without the need for additional water vapor measurements to within 1 % per month. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) A method has been developed to correlate spectral signatures obtained with various fluorescence LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) systems. A calibrated fluorescence reference target was used to calibrate the spectral response of the LIDAR transmitter channels and obtain their transfer functions. Two LIDAR systems have been spectrally characterized, and corrected signatures for two bioaerosols are presented. The first LIDAR system is the Standoff Integrated Bioserosol Active Hyperspectral Detection field LIDAR developed by Defence R&D Canada. This standoff system uses a 351-nm pulsed laser in a monoaxial design. The second system is a lab-sized aerosol chamber designed to characterize fluorescent aerosols under controlled environmental conditions. The chamber was designed according to classical short-range biaxial LIDAR principles, with the purpose of duplicating the results obtained with field LIDAR systems. Aerosols generated within the chamber are probed by a 355-nm pulsed laser, and autofluorescence spectra are measured with a spectrometer and an intensified charge-coupled device camera. This chamber is used to collect the reference spectra of various fluorescing aerosols and simulants of biological agents. One of the main objectives in using this chamber is to produce and compile a library of instrument-free fluorescing spectra that can be transferred to other LIDAR-based bioaerosol sensors with known optical transfer functions. [Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The electronically steerable flash lidar (ESFL) is a waveform lidar sensor that incorporates two advances relevant to the design of future spaceborne lidar sensors. The first is a nonmechanical scanner that splits a single incoming beam into a variable number of output beams that can be aligned independently across track; the transmitted beam pattern can be changed up to 60 Hz. The second is a flash focal plane array (FFPA) capable of recording waveforms simultaneously from a 128 x 128 pixel grid with individual footprints spread over multiple pixels. In this paper, the incoming beam was used to illuminate eight 8.4-m footprints which were imaged simultaneously on 12 x 12 pixel subsets of the FFPA. The FFPA digitizes waveforms at a vertical resolution of 75 cm over 41 vertical bins to create waveforms of 30.75-m depth. Multiple waveforms obtained using range-gating were combined for these analyses. ESFL data were collected at Manitou Experimental Forest (MEF), located in the Pikes Peak National Forest, Colorado, USA and the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest (AEF), located in the Angelina Forest, Nacogdoches, TX. We evaluated the use of individual pixel-level and aggregated footprint-level waveforms and alternate approaches to define the extent of each footprint in the focal plane array. Using discrete return lidar data as a reference, we evaluated the ability of ESFL lidar to estimate canopy height and compared the two sensors' rates of penetration to the terrain surface. We found the footprint-level waveforms were better suited for use with existing waveform processing techniques, although techniques for processing at the pixel-level appear feasible. Relationships between height estimates from each lidar data set were most closely related when footprint-level ESFL waveforms were calculated after removing pixels that had less than 50% of the maximum energy within that footprint. Regressions between ESFL and reference lidar data estimates - f height explained 84% (AEF) and 85% (MEF) of variance; this study could not say definitively which method yielded the more accurate estimate of height. [Termes IGN] téléscopeRésumé : (Auteur) Daytime lidar operation in the middle atmosphere requires a narrow field of view (FOV) of the receiving telescope for effective background reduction and a high-transmission narrow-band detection. The laser beam position in the atmosphere relative to the optical axis of the receiving telescope is subject to high-frequency disturbances such as turbulence, vibration, and wind as well as comparable slow drift (thermal effects of the laser, stability of the building, etc.). We developed a beam stabilization system (BSS) that ensured a pulse-to-pulse stabilization of the laser beam with ~ 3 μrad remaining jitter, allowing ~ 60 μrad FOV. With BSS and single-pulse data acquisition system, the optimal alignment of the laser and telescope can be controlled, and information on the FOV and laser divergence in the far field can be derived. The capability of the BSS is to stabilize the laser against all internal and external disturbances below the repetition rate of the laser.
