[Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture and wet biomass changes between two noninstantaneous SAR observations markedly affect the displacement estimates obtainable with Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR). The separation, the modeling of these influences besides their uncoupling from the displacement signal, and the atmospheric disturbances are still unsolved issues for several repeat-pass interferometric applications. This paper focuses on the separation of vegetation changes from the other phase contributions affecting repeat-pass measurements over vegetated areas. These phase terms mainly relate to changes in soil moisture, atmospheric delays, and surface deformation. The separation is achieved with a first-order scattering solution decomposing the observed HH and VV DInSAR phases in the sum of several phase terms. The latter mainly consider the changes in soil surface scattering and in the two-way propagation through a vertically oriented vegetation canopy. No assumption is made on the spatiotemporal evolution of the displacement and atmosphere. The overall approach is tested on a L-band data set acquired over an agricultural area. Upon calibration, the model allows for estimating changes in wet biomass based on the nonzero HH–VV DInSAR phase difference observed over several birefringent agricultural fields. The obtained biomass estimates provide then a correction for the effect of vegetation changes on the observed HH and VV DInSAR phases. Deprived of the vegetation contribution, the remainder phase terms can be more easily explored for further analyses, e.g., the estimation of soil moisture changes and/or surface movements in vertically oriented vegetated areas. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Auteur) Rock depiction in Swiss topographic maps has evolved from humble line drawings into expressive renderings indicating slope, aspect and traversability. In this paper, an automatic method to derive monochrome Swiss-style rock hachures from a raster elevation model is presented. The proper placement and light modulation of the linear strokes depend on the availability of sound foundations for both terrain generalization and relief shading, for which two novel methods are introduced. The generalization applies line integral convolution along slope lines to the elevation values. The resulting smoothed raster has the footprint of its steep faces enlarged to increase the map space available for steep faces. The shaded relief is generated with the focus on terrain edges, unlike common raster cell-based methods. The rock hachures are modulated according to the grey values of the shaded relief. Finally, we present two topographic maps that demonstrate this new method of depicting relief. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Topographic maps are powerful tools for the purpose of identifying land use and cover change (LUCC) as they are among the most reliable representations of past landscapes for the time prior to the existence of aerial photography. In light of the increased availability of historical maps, we argue that there is a need for a standardized process to assess map comparability in a systematic way in order to avoid, or at least minimize, the detection of spurious landscape changes due to incompatible map series. A full understanding of map quality, background and error distributions is fundamental to attain reliable LUCC results. The conceptual framework presented in this study considers the context, distortion and cartographic generalization of topographic maps. Furthermore, it includes an approach to homogenize the level of generalization of landscape elements (e.g. forests) from maps with different scales. To demonstrate its application, we assessed the comparability of seven topographic maps from Canton Zurich covering a time span of 336 years (1664–2000). Overall, for the maps of Canton Zurich, a wall-to-wall comparison of forest cover based on the topographic maps presented here can be problematic for the oldest map from 1664. Based on the results, a wall-to-wall comparison with the later maps is not recommended, due to its substantial distortion. Yet, after re-generalization of natural landscape elements, such as forests, a comparison based on landscape indices is possible, even for the oldest map. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that maps from the mid-19th century onward possess an acceptable level of accuracy. This framework can be applied to a wide range of maps at regional, national, or global levels, providing the opportunity to look at land cover history over multiple centuries. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (Auteur) In the autumn of 1914, Austria-Hungary began to prepare for the possibility of an Italian offensive by building field fortifications, which formed the Tyrol Defense Line (TDL). Mountainous areas, such as the area of the TDL, present obstacles to trafficability in large part caused by terrain slope. On the eastern Tyrol front, steep slope obstructed trafficability when the Italians attacked the TDL and represented, in turn, an advantage for the Austro-Hungarian defense. This paper focuses on the assessment of the conditions of trafficability determined by slope in the eastern Tyrol front, using a GIS cost distance analysis. Key sources were the maps of Austrian and Italian official histories, parameters derived mainly from Marinelli’s slope classification, and from the interpretation of the particular historical circumstances. The advantages and disadvantages were considered from the perspective of the defensive and offensive and their significance for the history of this conflict. In particular, these were related to the perimeter to be defended by alternative Austro-Hungarian lines. [Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In remote sensing images, the absolute orientation of objects is arbitrary. Depending on an object’s orientation and on a sensor’s flight path, objects of the same semantic class can be observed in different orientations in the same image. Equivariance to rotation, in this context understood as responding with a rotated semantic label map when subject to a rotation of the input image, is therefore a very desirable feature, in particular for high capacity models, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). If rotation equivariance is encoded in the network, the model is confronted with a simpler task and does not need to learn specific (and redundant) weights to address rotated versions of the same object class. In this work we propose a CNN architecture called Rotation Equivariant Vector Field Network (RotEqNet) to encode rotation equivariance in the network itself. By using rotating convolutions as building blocks and passing only the values corresponding to the maximally activating orientation throughout the network in the form of orientation encoding vector fields, RotEqNet treats rotated versions of the same object with the same filter bank and therefore achieves state-of-the-art performances even when using very small architectures trained from scratch. We test RotEqNet in two challenging sub-decimeter resolution semantic labeling problems, and show that we can perform better than a standard CNN while requiring one order of magnitude less parameters.
