[Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Ground processing of data from the Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument, part of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS), exploits new and unique science algorithms not previously used operationally. A range of data products from Level 1 through Level 3 is being produced. Because of MISR's unprecedented design, extensive prototyping was required from a relatively early stage. The data throughput is large, necessitating an innovative software design approach that maximizes performance. The systematic science processing software was developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), with data processing occurring at the NASA Langley Research Center using the EOS Core System (ECS), a collaborative arrangement that works well. With the availability of actual mission data following launch on the Terra spacecraft in December 1999, "MISR's computational needs have become better known, and many improvements have been made to both the science software and the production system to achieve a successful overall data processing capability. This paper provides information about MISR data for the science user, and describes the nature and scope of implementation and operations activities. [Termes IGN] Medium Resolution Imaging SpectrometerRésumé : (Auteur) To the great relief of the European Space Agency (ESA), Arianespace and European taxpayers and the delight of numerous European scientists, Envisat was launched and placed safely into its correct orbit during the early hours of friday, 1st march. As discussed in the cover story in the last issue of Geoinformatics, the main purpose of Envisat (= Environmental Satellite) is to obtain comprehensive information about many aspects of the Earth's land and sea surfaces and its atmosphere. So basically the huge satellite has been given a truly "green" agenda covering the acquisition of many types of scientific data for global monitoring, which ESA hopes can be collected by Envisat over its designed life of five years. Howerver its AATSR and MERIS optical imagers and its ASAR radar imager should also provide image data that is useful to many people working in the geoinformatics field. Though, within this context, it should be realised that the images acquired by Envisat will only have medium to coarse ground resolution values - since the satellite's instruments are designed mainly to operate on a global, continental or regional scale. [Termes IGN] Medium Resolution Imaging SpectrometerRésumé : (Auteur) At the begining of march, the European Space Agency (ESA) is scheduled to have its new polar-orbiting satellite, Envisat, launched from the Kourou Space Centre in French Guyana using the powerful Ariane-5 rocket. Given the satellite's huge size (10m in heigh) weight (8,5 tons) and cost ($2,3 billion) and the large battery of imagers and other sensors that have been mounted on it, this is probably the single most important Earth observation project that has ever been undertaken by ESA.. Indeed one can hardly contemplate the consequences for the Agency should there be a launch failure or a situation where the satellite cannot be operate fully. Not only have many of the current hopes of ESA been invested in Envisat, but so are the hopes of the large numbers of scientists who have signed up to use the data that will be generated by the satellite's imagers and other instruments. Indeed its importance within the scientific segment of the European space remote sensing community can hardly be over emphasized - especially for those involved in various different aspects concerning the monitoring of the environment on a global scale.
