[Termes IGN] SPOT5Résumé : (Auteur) The VEGETATION instrument is the starting point of a European Earth monitoring system that was developed jointly by France, the European Commission, Belgium, Italy and Sweden. Since April 1998, VEGETATION has provided a high quality global monitoring of the day-to-day land cover dynamics at I km resolution. The whole dataset is now available free of charge to the broad range of potential users and applications. The quality of delivered products in terms of radiometry, geometry and additional processing for directional and atmospheric effects stands VEGETATION as an excellent tool for the monitoring of surface hydrology, crops, forest and land cover. Surface reflectances that are delivered by the operational VEGETATION system are corrected for molecular and aerosol scattering, for water vapour, ozone and other gas absorption. So far, the only well known Maximum Value Composite (MVC) technique was used in the construction of 10-day synthesis. An additional enhanced composite product is now available, which evaluates the atmospheric optical depth and normalizes angular Sun-target-sensor variations. After presenting the VEGETATION instrument and products, this paper introduces the new compositing schemes (Duchemin and Maisongrande 2002, Duchernin et al. 2002) and presents samples of the new products. [Termes IGN] ORBVIEWRésumé : (Auteur) Regular readers of Geoinformatics will know from the front cover and the accompanying short article in the July/August 2003 issue of the magazine that the launch of the OrbView-3 satellite had been carried out successfully on 26th June, 2003. After a rather extended period while the commissioning of the satellite; the radiometric and geometric calibration of the imager; and the validation of the operation of the satellite and its pushbroom scanner were carried out, the first set of sample images was released by ORBIMAGE on 18th December, 2003. These comprised high-resolution images of Tokyo, Japan ; Baghdad, Iraq ; and Sacramento, California and Washington, D.C. in the U.S.A. In fact, these are samples of the OrbView BASIC image product that will be offered by ORBIMAGE. Samples of the geo-referenced and rectified OrbView ORTHO image product will be released in January 2004. [Termes IGN] satellite militaireRésumé : (Auteur) My two previous overview articles on high-resolution imagery from space were published in the March 2001 and September 2002 issues of Geoinformafics. These were concerned mainly with the commercial providers of such imagery - since the vast majority of the readers of the magazine (and users in general) do not have access to the high-resolution imagery obtained from military reconnaissance satellites. However it has been apparent for some time that the largest consumers of high-resolution space imagery worldwide are those government agencies involved in intelligence gathering and in mapping for military purposes. Within this particular context, the commercial space imagery supplements the imagery gathered by dedicated reconnaissance satellites. At the recent ISPRS Workshop on "High Resolution Mapping from Space" held between 6th and 8th October 2003 at the University of Hannover, I was invited to present an overview on current developments and future trends in imaging and mapping from space covering the high-resolution imagery acquired from both commercial and military satellites. The present article is based on this presentation. Because of its length, the article has been divided into three main parts - concerned with developments in North America, Asia and Europe respectively. For the purposes of this overview, high-resolution imagery has been defined as that having a ground sampled distance (SD) or ground pixel size of 5m or smaller. [Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (auteur) The U.S./French Jason-1 satellite is carrying a state-of-the-art GPS receiver to support precise orbit determination (POD) requirements. The performance of the Jason-1 “BlackJack” GPS receiver was strongly reflected in early POD results from the mission, enabling radial accuracies of 1–2 cm soon after the satellite's 2001 launch. We have made further advances in the GPS-based POD for Jason-1, most notably in describing the phase center variations of the on-board GPS antenna. We have also adopted new geopotential models from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). The new strategies have enabled us to better exploit the unique contributions of the BlackJack GPS tracking data in the POD process. Results of both internal and external (e.g., laser ranging) comparisons indicate that orbit accuracies of 1 cm (radial RMS) are being achieved for Jason-1 using GPS data alone.
