[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose a fundamental approach to perform the class of Range and Nearest Neighbor (NN) queries, the core class of spatial queries used in location-based services, without revealing any location information about the query in order to preserve users’ private location information. The idea behind our approach is to utilize the power of one-way transformations to map the space of all objects and queries to another space and resolve spatial queries blindly in the transformed space. Traditional encryption based techniques, solutions based on the theory of private information retrieval, or the recently proposed anonymity and cloaking based approaches cannot provide stringent privacy guarantees without incurring costly computation and/or communication overhead. In contrast, we propose efficient algorithms to evaluate KNN and range queries privately in the Hilbert transformed space. We also propose a dual curve query resolution technique which further reduces the costs of performing range and KNN queries using a single Hilbert curve. We experimentally evaluate the performance of our proposed range and KNN query processing techniques and verify the strong level of privacy achieved with acceptable computation and communication overhead. [Termes IGN] système de gestion de connaissancesRésumé : (Auteur) Digital cartography offers exciting opportunities for recording indigenous knowledge, particularly in contexts where a people's relationship to the land has high cultural significance. Canada's north offers a useful case study of both the opportunities and challenges of such projects. Through the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC), Inuit peoples have been invited to become partners in innovative digital mapping projects, including creating atlases of traditional place names, recording the patterns and movement of sea ice, and recording previously uncharted and often shifting traditional routes over ice and tundra. Such projects have generated interest in local communities because of their potential to record and preserve traditional knowledge and because they offer an attractive visual and multimedia interface that can address linguistic and cultural concerns. But given corporations' growing interest in the natural resources of the Arctic and the concomitant rise in government concern about claims to Arctic sovereignty, such maps may also be of interest to a broad range of actors and for a variety of purposes. Because these projects rely heavily upon, and record, oral knowledge, and because they convert such knowledge into highly malleable and easily disseminated digital content, they raise challenging issues around informed consent, intellectual and cultural property, and privacy. This article identifies and examines these issues and describes the collaborative and interdisciplinary research established to identify and address the use of traditional knowledge in digital cartography. [Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Reverse geocoding is defined as the extraction of textual information, such as a name or an address, from geographic coordinates. This technique is common in many geo-application scenarios, e.g., in freely available online-based mapping services. However, if personal data are mapped, confidentiality issues may arise, such as if the data are derived from a crime-incidents database. This research provides an evaluation of seven freely available Web mapping services in regard to reverse geocoding accuracy and privacy aspects. The services' textual accuracy is measured using crime data from Vienna, Austria. The accuracy associated with reverse geocoding is derived for districts with different residential densities to determine whether any error variation is associated with the underlying residential structure. Furthermore, this research investigates the reidentification risk when compromising personal information. Using a free online telephone database and addresses in a crime-incidents dataset, the probable names that are linked to crime victims are identified. The results showed that the accuracy ranges from 0% to 23% depending on the predefined precision level. Comparing seven online reverse geocoding services (TravelGIS, Google Maps, nominatim, ArcGIS, Yahoo, Bing, and Geonames), TravelGIS performs better at the highest precision level, whereas Geonames performs better at a lower precision level. However, the results showed no difference among the districts with different residential densities. As for the reidentification risk, 68% probable victims were identified from the database. This work discusses the specific tasks that users have to complete when retrieving addresses associated with crime-incident locations. The article concludes with an evaluation of the reverse geocoding process and a discussion of the privacy risk associated with it.
