[Termes IGN] surveillance d'ouvrageRésumé : (auteur) Nature based solutions are growing rapidly in order to mitigate in the near future the effects of climate change and rise of sea level on most anthropogenic coasts. In that frame, the CHERbourg bLOC (CHERLOC) project aims to study new coastal engineering solutions (overtopping, sediment transport) thanks to two new artificial units in two test sites (Normandy, France) considering biodiversity preservation but also societal acceptability. This study details an efficient method to monitor such coastal infrastructure using terrestrial Structure from Motion (SfM). In 2021, surveys were conducted to acquire pictures in April, May, June and November. A time series of 3D photogrammetric models was generated using open source SfM software. The first model was georeferenced using Ground Control Points (GCP) measured by Differential Global Navigation Satellite System (DGNSS) so that it could be used as a reference for the following point clouds using surrounding ripraps assumed to be non-mobile through the period of the study. The georeferencing Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) was found to be 1.8 cm for the April model whereas RMSEs of relative registrations of the following dates were found to be sub-centimetric. These results can be used to observe and measure blocks displacements as well as sand volumes evolution throughout the time series. The biggest displacement was found to be 23 cm between April and June. Sand topographic variation shows a continuous accumulation on selected cross-sections between April and November with an overall height accumulation of about 30 cm. Sand volumes measurements show consistent results with an added volume of 3.67 m3 on the previous areas. [Termes IGN] Sinkiang (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) On the basis of the spectral shape of thermal infrared (TIR) emissivity for sandy land, a remote sensing sand index called the sand differential emissivity index (SDEI) is proposed in this article to simply and conveniently detect sandy land over large areas. The SDEI is evaluated on ground, airborne, and spaceborne thermal emissivity data, and it shows good characterization of sandy land and performs better in sandy land identification than two previous indices. The SDEI was also evaluated in the transition zones of China’s four mega-sandy lands and was applied to long-term land surface emissivity to obtain the spatial distribution and variation in China’s sandy land from 2000 to 2016. The findings showed that a mean accuracy of 96% and a mean kappa coefficient of 0.83 were obtained in the transition zones, and the sandy land in the transition zone exhibited a decreasing trend over the past 17 years and a significant decline in the Mu Us sandy land. Meanwhile, the sandy land area in China decreased by 3.6×104 km 2 (1.53%) by the end of 2016 compared with that in early 2000. [Termes IGN] texture du solRésumé : (auteur) The present study investigates the potential of synthetic aperture radar in demonstrating the relative percentage of sand, silt and clay content in the soil. The contribution of vegetation and topography in the backscattering coefficient has been significantly reduced by employing the terrain correction model, dual polarized SAR vegetation index and water cloud model. The target parameters namely ‘Soil Roughness (hrms-soil)’ and ‘Dielectric Constant’ (ε′vv−soil ) has arrived from cross-polarization ratio and modified Dubois model. The extracted target parameters are sufficiently correlated with in situ sand (R2 = 0.81) and clay measurements (R2 = 0.78). The relative percentage of silt was mapped by the novel idea of performing the correlation analysis between hrms-soil and ε′vv−soil and thus represented the percentage of silt with reasonable accuracy (R2 = 0.77). From the soil triangle formed with three estimated target parameters, we found that the clay category has shared around 35% of the total area followed by sandy loam (23%). [Termes IGN] voie ferréeRésumé : (auteur) Blown sand hazards at the Jieqiong section of the Lhasa–Shigatse railway are severe, and their formation mechanism is unclear. Moreover, sand prevention and control work cannot be carried out. Therefore, the dynamic mechanism of blown sand at the Jieqiong section of the Lhasa–Shigatse Railway was investigated by field observation, laboratory analysis, and calculation. Results show that the yearly sand–moving wind at the Jieqiong section commonly originates from the SW direction. The yearly resultant drift direction and the yearly resultant angle of the maximum possible sand transport quantity are NE direction. The angle between railway trend and sand transport direction is 5°–30°. During dry season, sand materials are blown up by the wind, forming wind–sand flow and movement to the NE direction, at which they are blocked by the railway roadbed. Consequently, accumulation occurs and causes serious damage. Strong wind and dryness are synchronous within a season. The directions of sand source and prevailing wind are consistent, thereby aggravating the blown sand dynamic further. The present results provide a reference for controlling sand hazards in the locale. [Termes IGN] variation temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Coastal lagoon–tidal inlet systems occur worldwide, and each has its own unique evolution characteristics in relation to its geographical location, sediment characteristics, and tidal current and ocean wave conditions. However, insufficient observation data means that it is often difficult to fully understand the long-term and short-term evolution of ebb-tidal deltas, and it is even more difficult to monitor and warn against their evolution. This study uses long time-series remote sensing data for the period 1962–2018 to investigate the evolution of an ebb-tidal delta in Xincun Lagoon, Hainan Island, China. Four shoal-sandbar breaching and tidal-inlet migration events were observed, and the corresponding periodic variation characteristics of the ebb-tidal delta were documented. A conceptual model for the periodic evolution of ebb-tidal deltas was also proposed. The results showed that the long-period (15–20 years) evolution was controlled by the effects of seabed friction and tidal-scale lagoon resonance, while the changes in the length of the east sand-spit could be used as a significant early warning indicator for shoal-sandbar breaching and tidal-inlet migration events. In addition, both types of event were jointly triggered by typhoon storm-surges and the accompanying heavy rainfall, strong winds, and strong waves. Thus, the periodic evolution process of the ebb-tidal delta in Xincun Lagoon was determined to be a systematic process that is either controlled or influenced by a series of interconnecting factors. Moreover, we concluded that it is both feasible and valuable to establish a monitoring and early warning framework of ebb-tidal deltas through the use of time-series remote sensing images. The results of this study can improve the existing understanding of the processes and driving factors of periodic shoal-sandbar breaching and tidal-inlet migration, and can also increase safety nourishment for coastal lagoon–tidal inlet systems.
