[Termes IGN] turbidité océaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents a comprehensive assessment of the performance of the commonly used atmospheric correction models (NIR, SWIR, NIR-SWIR and FM) and ocean color products (OC3 and OC2) derived from MODIS images over the Arabian Gulf, Sea of Oman, and Arabian Sea. The considered atmospheric correction models have been used to derive MODIS normalized water-leaving radiances (nLw), which are compared to in situ water nLw(λ) data collected at different locations by Masdar Institute, United Arab of Emirates, and from AERONET-OC (the ocean color component of the Aerosol Robotic Network) database. From this comparison, the NIR model has been found to be the best performing model among the considered atmospheric correction models, which in turn shows disparity, especially at short wavelengths (400–500 nm) under high aerosol optical depth conditions (AOT (869) > 0.3) and over turbid waters. To reduce the error induced by these factors, a modified model taking into consideration the atmospheric and water turbidity conditions has been proposed. A turbidity index was used to identify the turbid water and a threshold of AOT (869) = 0.3 was used to identify the dusty atmosphere. Despite improved results in the MODIS nLw(λ) using the proposed approach, Chl-a models (OC3 and OC2) show low performance when compared to the in situ Chl-a measurements collected during several field campaigns organized by local, regional and international organizations. This discrepancy might be caused by the improper parametrization of these models or/and the improper selection of bands. Thus, an adaptive power fit algorithm (R2 = 0.95) has been proposed to improve the estimation of Chl-a concentration from 0.07 to 10 mg/m3 by using a new blue/red MODIS band ratio of (443,488)/645 instead of the default band ratio used for OC3(443,488)/547. The selection of this new band ratio (443,488)/645 has been based on using band 645 nm which has been found to represent both water turbidity and algal absorption. [Termes IGN] turbidité océaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) New photobathymetry and water quality software is described here that utilizes subpixel analysis software (Subpixel Classifier) with an autonomous image calibration procedure and analytic retrieval algorithm to simultaneously retrieve and report bottom depth and the concentrations of suspended chlorophyll, suspended sediments, and colored dissolved organic carbon on a perpixel basis from four-band multispectral image data. From the derived composition, the QSC2 (Quantitative Shoreline Characterization, Version 2.0) software also computes and reports water column visibility parameters (vertical and horizontal subsurface sighting ranges and turbidity, each at four wavelength band passes, plus Secchi depth as a scalar) as well as depth and turbidity confidence. Qsc2 compensates for the effects of the atmosphere, sun and sky reflections from the water surface, subpixel contributions from exposed land, and variations in the bottom material properties. All information is derived automatically from the pixel data alone. The performance of the Qsc2 software was demonstrated using a four-band Ikonos image of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Accuracies of the image-derived compositions, water clarity, and depths were assessed using field and laboratory measurements for eight representative lakes in the scene. The means of the differences of the field-measured and image-derived suspended chlorophyll and colored dissolved organic carbon concentrations for the eight lakes were 1.82 ug/l and 4.34 mgC/1, respectively. The image-derived concentrations of suspended sediments were all below the threshold of detection for the field samples (5 mg/1), in agreement with the field data. The mean of the differences between field-measured and image-derived Secchi depths was 0.76 m. The mean depth difference was 0.57 m. [Termes IGN] turbidité océaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the applicability of combined Landsat Thematic Mapper and European Remote Sensing 2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to turbidity, Secchi disk depth, and suspended sediment concentration retrievals in the Gulf of Finland. The results show that the estimated accuracy of these water quality variables using a neural network is much higher than the accuracy using simple and multivariate regression approaches. The results also demonstrate that SAR is only a marginally helpful to improve the estimation of these three variables for the practical use in the study area. However, the method still needs to be refined in the area under study. [Termes IGN] turbidité océaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) Environmental pollution is among the most common problems of different nations as a global problem. Especially, water pollution is a continuous threat to surface water resources and transportation routes in the world. Istanbul Straight (Bosphorus) is a model for such a situation due to water passage from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, pollution sources of the Bosphorus originate from the wastage of many nations that have costal areas along the Black Sea and Danube River in addition to the population as well as industrial pollutants from the city itself. Pollution surface measurements are carried out concerning total suspended solids JSS), humic materials (HM), chemical oxygen demand (COD), poliaromatik hydrocarbons (PAH) and hydrodynamic conditions of water. On the other hand, digital multispectral Landsat-5 satellite data were recorded and co-registered for a portion of the Bosphorus. Relationships are sought between the water quality parameters and the reflectance values by the use of regression analysis. Although such an analysis has been carried out in the past during 1986 since then there are signs of significant water pollution increment in the Bosphorus. Therefore, this paper aims at the deduction of the most recent data analysis from 1997 in comparisons with earlier studies so as to make temporal decisions in addition to the spatial features. Adaptive parameter estimation in the regression analyses provides efficient computation in an economic manner. These observed reflectance values show a strong relationship with the water quality observation. The necessary values are provided in single pixel values for each band at the station point in the Bosphorus. Satellite data provide a useful index of TSS, HM and PAH. As the reflectance (in the turbidity area) in the longer red and near IR increases faster than the reflectance in shorter blue and green wavelengths, it can be seen that turbidity levels are positively related to reflectance.
