[Termes IGN] subsidenceRésumé : (Auteur) The interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique is used to detect surface deformations in the French Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal mining basin. Several subsiding areas had already been observed at the sites of Lens, Billy-Montigny, Courrieres and Ostricourt during the 1992-2000 period. InSAR deformation measurements are compared with ground-based levelling measurements and an analysis of the results shows a good agreement for the relative deformations. However, the InSAR study reveals a systematic bias of the absolute levelling values. Our interpretation is that the stability points of the ground-based monitoring network probably moved during the study period. Such cross-checking is particularly important considering the current legal value of the levelling measurements. [Termes IGN] service fondé sur la positionRésumé : (Editeur) After a faltering start in the early 2000s, growth in mass-market LBS applications appears ready to explode, driven by implementation of GNSS capabilities on mobile handsets. Customer expectations and technological advances are contributing to the growing demand, but standardization has long been needed to provide a common framework as a real technological and market enabler. Success appeared first in the assisted GPS standard, an effort that has now progressed within the Third Generation Partnership Project to address assisted GNSS techniques in which Europe’s EGNOS and Galileo system already play and will continue to play a key part. [Termes IGN] transport publicRésumé : (Auteur) The Geospatial Public Transport Information available for the United Kingdom on the World-Wide Web is evaluated. Searches for relevant websites were made at different geographical scales; the breadth of content covered and level of technology used was assessed for each site found. Public Transport Maps on each website were rated according to eleven aspects of cartographic design and Web functionality. It was found that interactivity (represented by the use of higher technology) was greater for websites giving Public Transport Information for larger areas; however, the majority of information was communicated through text or static maps. The use of colour and symbology was generally found to be good in Public Transport Web maps, but marginalia was often insufficient and hardcopy printing sometimes inadequate, limiting the usability of the maps. A number of guidelines for good practice in the production of Public Transport Web maps are suggested, stressing the importance of clarity and legibility, plus some comments on website functionality. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) An important aspect of a Dutch research project into usable (and well scaled) mobile maps for consumers is presented: the development of an appropriate field-based usability evaluation methodology for the prototype of a geo-mobile application that will be the result of a user centred design approach. Automatic generalisation, required for the user's orientation in space, but also for progressive data transfer, will be an important aspect of the prototype. What is reported here is an effective and technically unique user research methodology, based on a combination of video observation, thinking aloud and semi-structured interviewing. The experiments that have led to this outcome revealed some interesting usability issues that deserve further investigation.
