[Termes IGN] surface de la merRésumé : (auteur) We review the measurement of the mean dynamic topography (MDT) of the Mediterranean using ellipsoidal heights of sea level at discrete tide gauge locations, and across the entire basin using satellite altimetry, subtracting estimates of the geoid obtained from recent models. This ‘geodetic approach’ to the determination of the MDT can be compared to the independent ‘ocean approach’ that involves the use of in situ oceanographic measurements and ocean modelling. We demonstrate that with modern geoid and ocean models there is an encouraging level of consistency between the two sets of MDTs. In addition, we show how important geodetic MDT information can be in judging between existing global ocean circulation models, and in providing insight for the development of new ones. The review makes clear the major limitations in Mediterranean data sets that prevent a more complete validation, including the need for improved geoid models of high spatial resolution and accuracy. Suggestions are made on how a greater amount of reliable geo-located tide gauge information can be obtained in the future. [Termes IGN] montagneRésumé : (auteur) Geoid determinations by the Remove-Compute-Restore (R-C-R) technique involves the application of Stokes’ integral on reduced gravity anomalies. Numerical Stokes’ integration produces an error depending on the choice of the integration radius, grid resolution and Stokes’ kernel function.
In this work, we aim to evaluate the accuracy of Stokes’ integral through a study on synthetic gravitational signals derived from EGM2008 on three different landscape areas with respect to the size of the integration domain and the resolution of the anomaly grid. The influence of the integration radius was studied earlier by several authors. Using real data, they found that the choice of relatively small radii (less than 1°) enables to reach an optimal accuracy. We observe a general behaviour coherent with these earlier studies. On the other hand, we notice that increasing the integration radius up to 2° or 2.5° might bring significantly better results. We note that, unlike the smallest radius corresponding to a local minimum of the error curve, the optimal radius in the range 0° to 6° depends on the terrain characteristics. We also find that the high frequencies, from degree 600, improve continuously with the integration radius in both semi-mountainous and mountain areas.
Finally, we note that the relative error of the computed geoid heights depends weakly on the anomaly spherical harmonic degree in the range from degree 200 to 2000. It remains greater than 10 % for any integration radii up to 6°. This result tends to prove that a one centimetre accuracy cannot be reached in semi-mountainous and mountainous regions with the unmodified Stokes’ kernel.Numéro de notice : A2015-391 Affiliation des auteurs : LASTIG LAREG (2012-mi2018) Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1515/jag-2014-0026 En ligne : http://dx.oi.org/10.1515/jag-2014-0026 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=76860

[Termes IGN] moment d'inertieRésumé : (auteur) The Earth’s dynamic figure parameters, namely the principal moments of inertia and dynamic ellipticities of the whole Earth, the fluid outer core and the solid inner core, are fundamental parameters for geodetic, geophysical and astronomical studies. This study aims to re-estimate the mass and the dynamic figure parameters of the Earth on the basis of some global gravity models (EGM2008, EIGEN-6C and EIGEN-6C2) recently released with unprecedented accuracies, as well as an improved value of the gravitational constant G recommended by the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA). With the potential coefficients of EGM2008, EIGEN-6C and EIGEN-6C2 rescaled to be consistent with the IAU (International Astronomical Union) and IAG (International Association of Geodesy) numerical standards, and other values of relevant parameters also being consistent with those numerical standards, we have obtained consistent estimates of the dynamic figure parameters of the stratified Earth using the theory described in Chen and Shen (J Geophys Res 115:B12419 2010). Our preferred principal moments of inertia for the whole Earth are A=(80,085.1±9.6)×1033 kg m2,B=(80,086.8±9.6)×1033 kg m2, and C=(80,349.0±9.6)×1033 kg m2, respectively, the accuracies being limited by the uncertainties of G and e (dynamic ellipticity of the whole Earth).
