[Termes IGN] SPOTRésumé : (Auteur) The last weeks of the year 2000 have seen very considerable activity in the area of commercial high-resolution satellites. On november 20th, EarthWatch's QuickBird-1 satellite was launched and failed to go into orbit. On december 5th, the Israeli-backed EROS-A1 satellite was launched successfully. On december 18th, the amirican authorities granted licences to Space Imaging and EarthWatch to construct and operate satellites capable of producing space images with a ground pixel size of half-a-metre. Having, over the last year, visited the three main american companies that are engaged in this area and having seen and heard quite a lot about their activities at first hand, the editors invited me to take a long view and try to give a reasonably coherent and balanced account of what has become a very controversial area. [Termes IGN] pesanteur terrestreIndex. décimale : 30.40 Géodésie physique Résumé : (Auteur) In 1999, the ESA mission GOCE has been approved, the first satellite mission at all applying gradiometry. The gravity gradients will be observed with an accuracy at the mE-level, which enables the determination of the Earth gravity field with high accuracy. With GOCE, one achieves a geoid error of 1 cm at a spatial resolution of 100 km on the surface of the Earth resp. a gravity anomaly error of less than 1 mGal. Here we describe, how a satellite gradiometry mission works, which payload is absolutely necessary (e.g. accelerometers, star trackers, GPS) and what control systems are required. The formulas to analyse the observations are derived. The effect of the main error sources (e.g. misalignments, scale factor error, pointing error) are estimated and their spectral behaviour as well as their possible effect onto the mission goals are shown. Also the needed calibration strategies are discussed. Additionaly some aspects are addressed, which are important for the realisation of a gradiometer mission, especially for COCE: is a relativistic treatment needed, has one to distinguish between COM and COG, have the third derivatives of the potential to be used in the gradiometer equation, how has the angular velocity about the cross-track axis to be determined, where should a KALMAN-Filter be implemented or which analysis methods for the determination of the Earth gravity field are used ? Finally the wide range of applications for a global gravity field with high spatial resolution is mentioned. Beside geodesy (e.g. leveling with GPS), oceanography (by the combination with altimetry data), solid Earth physics (the gravitational potential as one of the few mirrors in the Earth's interior) and ice research benefit from the GOCE gravity field. Secondary goals are the investigation of sea surface variations and climate models.
