[Termes IGN] satellite d'observation de la TerreRésumé : (Auteur) The accurate prediction and observation of the ice masses at the poles, and particularly of their rates of change, is of interest to us all, not least because 5% of the Earth's population live just 1 meter above sea level. Native Arctic populations face profound changes to their way of life and even existence. Economic interest, associated with oil and gas and trans-Artic shipping, will grow as the pack ice declines, as too may strategic concerns over the sovereignty of the Arctic Ocean. The loss of pack ice may also affect the circulation of the Atlantic, and with it winter weather of western Europe. CryoSat is ESA's first mission dedicated to the observation of the Earth's polar ice masses. Its goals are to determine if there is indeed a downward trend in the mass of artic sea ice, and wether we should regard Antarctica as under threat from global warming. [Termes IGN] satellite d'observation de la TerreRésumé : (Auteur) In the preceding article (A05275), Prof. Duncan Wingham has outlined the genesis of CryoSat, its scientific objectives and its programmatic constraints. The mission objectives are characterised by the determination of small height-related changes over a three-year period. This imposes requirements on the type of measurements to be made, the physical stability of the system, control of the measurement configuration and consistency in the data processing system. The programmatic constraints on the other hand, may be simply characterised as the need for a relatively short development cycle with a stringent cost ceiling. CryoSat is a fully integrated system in which all of the elements have been developed together within the programme to ensure the control needed to satisfy the mission objectives. However, in the interests of readability, the system's description has been split over two articles : this one describing the elements that are to be launched into space, and the following one those parts that will remain on Earth. [Termes IGN] satellite d'observation de la TerreRésumé : (Auteur) In august 1960, an american corona spy satellite showed, for the first time, what the earth looked like from space. Images were captured to film and jettisoned to earth in a canister which was snatched from the-air by a USAF C-1119 aircraft. [...] Here, we present an overview of some of the major providers of satellites imagery. We'll concentrate on the output of those satellites currently operational although, if you are interested in archive data, our list of contacts provides some sources. [Termes IGN] TerraSAR-XRésumé : (Auteur) The along-track interferometric synthetic aperture radar (along-track InSAR) technique for mapping ocean currents at high spatial resolution from aircraft or satellites was introduced in the late 1980's. Since then, hardware and algorithms have been improved in the course of many projects and experiments. Airborne InSARs are now available for routine surveys. Current measurements from space could be demonstrated with data acquired from a Space Shuttle in february 2000. A first civilian satellite offering along-track InSAR capabilities over some longer period will become available in 2006. [Termes IGN] satellite d'observation de la TerreIndex. décimale : 30.40 Géodésie physique Résumé : (Editeur) "Physical Geodesy", published in 1967, has for many years been considered as the standard introduction to its field. The enormous progress since then has required a complete reworking. While basic material has been retained other parts are completely updated. However, there is a seamless welding of new ideas and methods (GPS, satellites, collocation). Highlights include: emphasis on global integration of geometry and gravity, a simplified approach to Molodensky's theory without integral equations, and a general combination of all geodetic data by least-squares collocation. In the second edition minor mistakes have been corrected.
