In this study, we found that the variations in water depth and presence/absence of ponding in the potholes of size greater than 1 ha can be predicted using USGS DEMs. The estimates of average water depths using USGS 3 m DEM was found to be 6% and 2% lower than the 1 m LiDAR DEM and the estimates of average water depths using USGS 10 m DEM was found to be 7% and 12% higher than the 1 m LiDAR DEM for the Walnut and Bunny potholes, respectively. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture is an important state variable of the land surface ecosystem. In this paper, the water cloud model (WCM) and advanced integral equation model (AIEM) are coupled to retrieve soil moisture using time series Sentinel-1A data and moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR), are cross-combined to initialize the calibrated model. The calibration results show the following: (1) Vegetation parameters have a great influence on model calibration; and (2) The combination of (NDVI, LAI) is recommended to calibrate the coupled model, the RMSE, R2 is 0.739 dB, and 0.716 for the observed and estimated backscattering coefficients. The soil moisture inversion results show that: (1) the accuracy of model calibration and soil moisture inversion are inconsistent; and (2) The normalized vegetation parameters, such as NDVI, EVI and FPAR, are suitable for WCM to describe vegetation characteristics, and NDVI is the optimum. When V2 is the NDVI, the average bias, MAE, RMSE, ubRMSE and R2 are –0.007 m3/m3, 0.074 m3/m3, 0.087 m³/m³, 0.087 m3/m3 and 0.750, respectively. [Termes IGN] modèle de géopotentiel localRésumé : (Auteur) Radial basis functions (RBFs) have been used extensively in satellite geodetic applications. However, to the author’s knowledge, their role in processing and modeling airborne gravity data has not yet been fully advocated or extensively investigated in detail. Compared with satellite missions, the airborne data are more suitable for these kinds of localized basis functions especially considering the following facts: (1) Unlike the satellite missions that can provide global or near global data coverage, airborne gravity data are usually geographically limited. (2) It is also band limited in the frequency domain. (3) It is straightforward to formulate the RBF observation equations from an airborne gravimetric system. In this study, a set of band-limited RBF is developed to model and downward continue the airborne gravity data for local geoid improvement. First, EIGEN6c4 coefficients are used to simulate a harmonic field to test the performances of RBF on various sampling, noise, and flight height levels, in order to gain certain guidelines for processing the real data. Here, the RBF method not only successfully recovers the harmonic field but also presents filtering properties due to its particular design in the frequency domain. Next, the software was tested for the GSVS14 (Geoid Slope Validation Survey 2014) area in Iowa as well as for the area around Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands by use of the real airborne gravity data from the Gravity for the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum (GRAV-D) project. By fully utilizing the three-dimensional correlation information among the flight tracks, the RBF can also be used as a data cleaning tool for airborne gravity data adjustment and cleaning. This property is further extended to surface gravity data cleaning, where conventional approaches have various limitations. All the related numerical results clearly show the importance and contribution of the use of the RBF for high- resolution local gravity field modeling. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) Field experiments (SMEX02) were conducted to evaluate the effects of dense agricultural crop conditions on soil moisture retrieval using passive microwave remote sensing. Aircraft observations were collected using a new version of the Polarimetric Scanning Radiometer (PSR) that provided four C band and four X band frequencies. Observations were also available from the Aqua satellite Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) at these same frequencies. SMEX02 was conducted over a three-week period during the summer near Ames, Iowa. Corn and soybeans dominate the region. During the study period the corn was approaching its peak water content state and the soybeans were at the mid point of the growth cycle. Aircraft observations are compared to ground observations. Subsequently models are developed to describe the effects of corn and soybeans on soil moisture retrieval. Multiple altitude aircraft brightness temperatures were compared to AMSR-E observations to understand brightness temperature scaling and provide validation. The X-band observations from the two sensors were in reasonable agreement. The AMSR-E C-band observations were contaminated with anthropogenic RFI, which made comparison to the PSR invalid. Aircraft data along with ancillary data were used in a retrieval algorithm to map soil moisture. The PSR estimated soil moisture retrievals on a field-by-field comparison had a standard error of estimate (SEE) of 5.5%. The error reduced when high altitude soil moisture estimates were aggregated to 25 km resolution (same as AMSR-E EASE grid product resolution) (SEE not, vert, similar 2.85%). These soil moisture products provide a validation of the AMSR retrievals. PSR/CX soil moisture images show spatial and temporal patterns consistent with meteorological and soil conditions. The dynamic range of the PSR/CX observations indicates that reasonable soil moisture estimates can be obtained from AMSR, even in areas of high vegetation biomass content (not, vert, similar 4–8 kg/m2). [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The soil moisture experiments held during June-July 2002 (SMEX02) at lowa demonstrated the potential of the L-band radiometer (PALS) in estimation of near surface soil moisture under dense vegetation canopy conditions. The L-band radar was also shown to be sensitive to near surface soil moisture. However, the spatial resolution of a typical satellite L-band radiometer is of the order of tens of kilometers, which is not sufficient to serve the full range of science needs for land surface hydrology and weather modeling applications. Disaggregation schemes for deriving subpixel estimates of soil moisture from radiometer data using higher resolution radar observations may provide the means for making available global soil moisture observations at a much finer scale. This paper presents a simple approach for estimation of change in soil moisture at a higher (radar) spatial resolution by combining L-band copolarized radar backscattering coefficients and L-band radiometric brightness temperatures. Sensitivity of AIRSAR L-band copolarized channels has been demonstrated by comparison with in situ soil moisture measurements as well as PALS brightness temperatures. The change estimation algorithm has been applied to coincident PALS and AIRSAR datasets acquired during the SMEX02 campaign. Using AIRSAR data aggregated to a 100-m resolution, PALS radiometer estimates of soil moisture change at a 400-m resolution have been disaggregated to 100-m resolution. The effect of surface roughness variability on the change estimation algorithm has been explained using integral equation model (IEM) simulations. A simulation experiment using synthetic data has been performed to analyze the performance of the algorithm over a region undergoing gradual wetting and dry down.
