These changes imply many new opportunities and exciting challenges for the surveyor on today's construction job. The role of surveyors changes as does the nature of work undertaken, surveyor-client relationship and the measure of success of any given project. Understanding these changes and appropriately responding to them will significantly contribute to the success of the surveying business in the twenty-first-century. Embracing new roles instead of regretting the loss of old ones is key to progress for the profession. Here, what is being measured is important and should be considered more carefully than traditional ways distance measurement. A focusing optical system was designed to adapt RML to surveying requirements. RML also has potential for new applications by user-designed tergets. The author presents characteristics of RLM and considerations for the design of provisional and application-oriented tergets.
