[Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) To improve the accuracy of sensor orientation using calibrated aerial images, this paper proposes an automatic sensor orientation method utilizing horizontal and vertical constraints on human-engineered structures, addressing the limitations faced with sub-optimal number of Ground Control Points (GCPs) within a scene. Related state-of-the-art methods rely on structured building edges, and necessitate manual identification of end points. Our method makes use of line-segments but eliminates the need for these matched end points, thus eliminating the need for inefficient manual intervention.
To achieve this, a 3D line in object space is represented by the intersection of two planes going through two camera centers. The normal vector of each plane can be written as a function of a pair of azimuth and elevations angles. The normal vector of the 3D line can be expressed by the cross product of these two plane’s normal vectors. Then, we create observation functions of horizontal and vertical line constraints based on the zero-vector cross-product and the dot-product of the normal vector of the 3D lines. The observation functions of the horizontal and vertical lines are then introduced into a hybrid Bundle Adjustment (BA) method as constraints, including observed image points as well as observed line segment projections. Finally, to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method, simulated and real data are tested. [Termes IGN] simplification de contourRésumé : (Auteur) An automatic method for the regularisation of building outlines is presented, utilising a combination of data‐ and model‐driven approaches to provide a robust solution. The core part of the method includes a novel data‐driven approach to generate approximate building polygons from a list of given boundary points. The algorithm iteratively calculates and stores likelihood values between an arbitrary starting boundary point and each of the following boundary points using a function derived from the geometrical properties of a building. As a preprocessing step, building segments have to be identified using a robust algorithm for the extraction of a digital elevation model. Evaluation results on a challenging dataset achieved an average correctness of 96·3% and 95·7% for building detection and regularisation, respectively. Definitions for CPI systems are given both on the plane and on the polyhedral surfaces of geodesic DGGSs, and examples of real-world DGGSs indexed using CPI are described. [Termes IGN] surface de référenceRésumé : (Auteur) Traditionally a laterally homogeneous and spherical base Earth model (e.g., the PREM model) is considered as input when computing the Earth’s equipotential surfaces, which are then resulted to be in symmetric shape. However, the Earth, known with a complex distribution of interior material and density, especially in the upper mantle and the crust, cannot be treated as a symmetric sphere. Recently, a CRUST1.0 model of crust layer is published and well accepted. But the effect caused by the asymmetric crust (and mantle) on equilibrium figures of the Earth cannot be analyzed by the traditional theories. A generalized theory of the figure of the Earth to third-order precision is firstly proposed in this paper, as well as the iterative calculation strategy to solve the complex equation system. In order to validate this generalized theory, the degeneration of this generalized theory with the PREM model is made and is compared with traditional theories, and it is shown that the result of this generalized theory, after degeneration, is consistent very well with traditional theory. Meanwhile, the effect (including both the direct and indirect effects) of the crust layer, from the CRUST1.0 model, on the figures of equipotential surfaces of the Earth’s interior, as well as their effects on the global dynamics flattening, will be presented as an application of this theory in accompanying paper. [Termes IGN] Royaume-UniRésumé : (Auteur) Inspired by Christopher Alexander’s conception of the world – space is not lifeless or neutral, but a living structure involving far more small things than large ones – a topological representation has been previously developed to characterize the living structure or the wholeness of geographic space. This paper further develops the topological representation and living structure for predicting human activities in geographic space. Based on millions of street nodes of the United Kingdom extracted from OpenStreetMap, we established living structures at different levels of scale in a nested manner. We found that tweet locations at different levels of scale, such as country and city, can be well predicted by the underlying living structure. The high predictability demonstrates that the living structure and the topological representation are efficient and effective for better understanding geographic forms. Based on this major finding, we argue that the topological representation is a truly multiscale representation, and point out that existing geographic representations are essentially single scale, so they bear many scale problems such as modifiable areal unit problem, the conundrum of length and the ecological fallacy. We further discuss on why the living structure is an efficient and effective instrument for structuring geospatial big data, and why Alexander’s organic worldview constitutes the third view of space.
