[Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Site visibility analysis is an important research topic with many applications in Geographical Information Systems. This paper introduces a new paradigm in terrain guarding, called k-guarding. K-guarding is a generalization of the classic guarding problem where, instead of only one guard, each surface patch is guarded by at least k guards. Afterwards, two optimization problems based on k-guarding are defined : an optimum k-guarding, and a constrained k-guarding. There are three heuristic approaches - k-greedy add, k-stingy drop, and k-reverse greedy -that are proposed as a solution to the above-mentioned optimization problems. The first two are known approaches adapted to k-guarding, while k-reverse greedy is a new, original heuristic. The heuristics are compared using actual topographic surfaces. It is shown that our approach (k-reverse greedy) gives on average the best near optimum solutions. The most surprising finding of the experiments is that the combination of heuristics introduced here yields even better results. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Applications like land-cover mapping frequently require the transformation of vector polygons to raster grids, such that each cell in the output raster is assigned a single class. Cell value assignment is a direct function of the geometric relationship between the vector polygons and the origin, orientation and spatial resolution of the raster structure, acting in conjunction with the value assignment rule employed by the algorithm. Results of an alternative approach to characterizing origin assignment variability are reported. A simulation approach is employed to perturb the origin of the grid lattice by amounts smaller than the grid spacing. The distribution of results across all output raster realizations indicates the rasterization variability for a particular input vector map at a particular cell size. Results for a representative vector land-cover dataset are presented, indicating that substantial variability is possible. The paper concludes with a discussion of theoretical and practical implications for the identification of appropriate cell resolutions, as well as for identifying particular input shapes and polygon configurations that may be especially sensitive to rasterization error. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes two methods for analyzing error propagation in overlay analysis of vector polygons, an analytical and simulation method. First, for the analytical method, the error is derived based on the error propagation law in statistics. In the second method, error propagation of overlay is simulated based on the positional error of the original polygon vertices, assuming a given error distribution of the vertices. For both methods, several geometrical error measures for the derived polygons are defined: (i) error measures for the perimeter, area and center of gravity of a polygon, and (ii) the error intervals for the polygon vertices. A test is performed to compare the differences between the two methods and their applicability. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in estimating the propagated error between the two methods. However, these two methods are suitable for different cases. The analytical method is applicable when the error ellipse of any intersection point of the original polygons does not intersect with error ellipses of all the vertices of the original polygons, if the intersection point or, in case of disjoint polygon boundaries, the error ellipse of any point on the boundary of one original polygon does not intersect with the error ellipse of any point on the boundary of the other original polygons. On the other hand, the simulation method is more generic, but more time consuming. [Termes IGN] système de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) As a model for sensor orientation and 3D geopositioning for high-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI), the affine transformation from object to image space has obvious advantages. Chief among these is that it is a straightforward linear model, comprising only eight parameters, which has been shown to yield sub-pixel geopositioning accuracy when applied to Ikonos stereo imagery. This paper aims to provide further insight into the affine model in order to understand why it performs as well as it does. Initially, the model is compared to counterpart, 'rigorous' affine transformation formulations which account for the conversion from a central perspective to affine image. Examination of these rigorous models sheds light on issues such as the effects of terrain and size of area, as well as upon the choice of reference coordinate system and the impact of the adopted scanning mode of the sensor. The results of application of the affine sensor orientation model to four multi-image Ikonos test field configurations are then presented. These illustrate the very high geopositioning accuracy attainable with the affine model, and illustrate that the model is not affected by size of area, but can be influenced to a modest extent by mountainous terrain, the mode of scanning and the choice of object space coordinate system. Above all, the affine model is shown to be both a robust and practical sensor orientation/triangulation model with high metric potential.
