[Termes IGN] Web Feature ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) The development of geographic information systems (GIS) is now being accompanied by an increasing popularity of Internet GIS mapping services. This study concerns two important issues with Internet GIS interoperability and Open source resources. Centering on the interplay of these two issues, we provide a systematic overview of techniques that have been used to deliver Internet GIS mapping and the relevance of the two issues with regard to these techniques. We then present a standard-and-open-source-based framework for Internet GIS mapping services to achieve data interoperability and high visual quality. The framework employs the Web Feature Service (WFS) to handle vector data and raster data. The Geography Markup Language (GML) standard is used for interoperable data storage and management. The Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) standard is used to visualize GML data in web browsers. Two preliminary prototypes have been developed to demonstrate the capabilities of the framework. We conclude that using standard-based solutions is an important and viable direction of interoperable Internet GIS services. Advances in standardization and technology have significant implications for Internet GIS mapping. There are many powerful open sources tools which, when coupled with open standards, may be used to develop high-quality online GIS services. Importantly, these solutions require no investment in software, yet achieve excellent interoperability and visualization quality; they are excellent alternative approaches to Internet mapping. [Termes IGN] toponyme flouRésumé : (Auteur) Place names are often used to describe and to enquire about geographical information. It is common for users to employ vernacular names that have vague spatial extent and which do not correspond to the official and administrative place name terminology recorded within typical gazetteers. There is a need therefore to enrich gazetteers with knowledge of such vague places and hence improve the quality of place name-based information retrieval. Here we describe a method for modelling vague places using knowledge harvested from Web pages. It is found that vague place names are frequently accompanied in text by the names of more precise co-located places that lie within the extent of the target vague place. Density surface modelling of the frequency of co-occurrence of such names provides an effective method of representing the inherent uncertainty of the extent of the vague place while also enabling approximate crisp boundaries to be derived from contours if required. The method is evaluated using both precise and vague places. The use of the resulting approximate boundaries is demonstrated using an experimental geographical search engine. [Termes IGN] service fondé sur la positionRésumé : (Auteur) In june, I visited i-locate, a start-up for mobile geo-services in Regensburg, Germany. The associates of i-locate, Ralph Buchfelder and Fabian Angerer, invited me for a talk about their new mobile service, Freitimer. Freitimer is a location-based community service for free-time activities which was launched in autumn 2008. The interview turned out to be a gripping conversation about the stony ground of location-based service operators and the future prospects of mobile information systems. [Termes IGN] service fondé sur la positionRésumé : (Editeur) After a faltering start in the early 2000s, growth in mass-market LBS applications appears ready to explode, driven by implementation of GNSS capabilities on mobile handsets. Customer expectations and technological advances are contributing to the growing demand, but standardization has long been needed to provide a common framework as a real technological and market enabler. Success appeared first in the assisted GPS standard, an effort that has now progressed within the Third Generation Partnership Project to address assisted GNSS techniques in which Europe’s EGNOS and Galileo system already play and will continue to play a key part.
