[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Mangroves are an important terrestrial carbon reservoir with numerous ecosystem services. Yet, it is difficult to inventory mangroves because of their low accessibility. A sampling approach that produces accurate assessment while maximizing logistical integrity of inventory operation is often required. Spatial decision support systems (SDSSs) provide support for integrating such a sampling design of fieldwork with operational considerations and evaluation of alternative scenarios. However, this fieldwork design driven by SDSS is often computationally intensive and repetitive. In this study, we develop a cyber-enabled SDSS framework to facilitate the computationally challenging fieldwork design that requires the efficacious selection of base camps and plots for the inventory of mangroves. Our study area is the Zambezi River Delta, Mozambique. Cyber-enabled capabilities, including scientific workflows and cloud computing, are integrated with the SDSS. Scientific workflows enable the automation of data and modeling tasks in the SDSS. Cloud computing offers on-demand computational support for interoperation among stakeholders for collaborative scenario evaluation for the fieldwork design of mangrove inventory. Further, this framework allows for harnessing high-performance computing capabilities for accelerating the fieldwork design. The cyber-enabled framework provides significant merits in terms of effective coordination among science and logistical teams, assurance of meeting inventory objectives, and an objective basis to collectively and efficaciously evaluate alternative scenarios. [Termes IGN] traitement de données localiséesRésumé : (Auteur) Data provenance allows scientists to validate their model as well as to investigate the origin of an unexpected value. Furthermore, it can be used as a replication recipe for output data products. However, capturing provenance requires enormous effort by scientists in terms of time and training. First, they need to design the workflow of the scientific model, i.e., workflow provenance, which requires both time and training. However, in practice, scientists may not document any workflow provenance before the model execution due to the lack of time and training. Second, they need to capture provenance while the model is running, i.e., fine-grained data provenance. Explicit documentation of fine-grained provenance is not feasible because of the massive storage consumption by provenance data in the applications, including those from the geoscience domain where data are continuously arriving and are processed. In this paper, we propose an inference-based framework, which provides both workflow and fine-grained data provenance at a minimal cost in terms of time, training, and disk consumption. Our proposed framework is applicable to any given scientific model, and is capable of handling different model dynamics, such as variation in the processing time as well as input data products arrival pattern. Our evaluation of the framework in a real use case with geospatial data shows that the proposed framework is relevant and suitable for scientists in geoscientific domain. [Termes IGN] XMLRésumé : (Auteur) We propose a new, streamlined, two-step geographic visual analytics (GVA) workflow for efficient data storage and access based on a native web XML database called Tree lank coupled with a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) graphical user interface for visualization. This new storage framework promises better scalability with rapidly growing datasets available on the Internet, while also reducing data access and updating delays for collaborative GVA environments. Both improve interactivity and flexibility from an end-user perspective. The proposed framework relies on a RES 1-based web interface providing scalable and spatio-temporal read-write access to complex spatio-tem-poral datasets of structured, semi-structured, or unstructured data. The clean separation of client and server at the HTTP web layer assures backward compatibility and better extensibility. We discuss the proposed framework and apply it on a prototype implementation employing world debt data. The excellent compression ratio of SVG as well as its fast delivery to end users are encouraging and suggest important steps have been made towards dynamic, highly interactive, and collaborative geovisual analytics environments. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The GeoJabber concept, protocol, and working prototype software introduced here enable same-time, different-place collaborative geovisualization. The key problem this work addresses is how to turn geovisual software states into persistent textual representations that can be shared between users. In the current implementation, GeoJabber leverages three key Open Source technologies: the GeoViz Toolkit, the Jabber protocol, and XStream. GeoJabber is the first project to support same-time different-place geovisualization tool state sharing. As part of this effort, this paper presents a typology of sharable geovisualization software states, rooted in the concepts of data, display, and category. [Termes IGN] synergicielRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses a key problem in the development of visual-analytical collaborative tools, how to design map-based displays to enable productive group work. We introduce a group communication theory, the Collective Information Sharing (CIS) bias, and discuss how it relates to communicative goals that need to be considered when designing collaborative, visually enabled, spatial-decision-support tools. The CIS bias framework suggests that key goals for developing such tools should be: (a) the harnessing of a group's collective knowledge emerging from collaborative discussions and (b) reducing the repeat of information that has already been shared within the group. We propose that web-accessible, map annotation tools are ideally suited to advancing these goals and outline how the CIS bias framework informs how geospatial annotation tools can maximize the potential of collaborative efforts. We offer design recommendations for annotation tools that function to: (a) facilitate access to and recall of geographically referenced discussion contributions, (b) document ideas for private as well as public discussion spaces, and (c) elicit all group members to contribute information in a given collaborative effort.
