Recent progress in this subject is the result of improved detection techniques, particularly the use of detectors at liquid helium temperatures. Unfortunately, the terrestrial atmosphere greatly restricts Infrared astronomers by allowing them to detect radiation only in narrow transmission windows and by presenting a foreground emission which limits the faintness of observable sources.
It is only from aircraft or balloon altitudes that we can begin to observe faint sources over the complete range of wavelengths between the visible and the radio regions. Few such observations have yet been made and none from satellites, although the latter vehicle will offer complete freedom from atmospheric effects.
New developments and intermediate steps will be required before the ultimate aim of flying in space can be achieved. It is not surprising therefore that the Fifth Eslab/Esrin Symposium should deal with this problem. This book contains the proceedings of the Symposium and faithfully records all discussions. The Symposium covered the present situation and future perspectives of I R techniques. International leaders in the field reviewed the results to date and the possible developments in telescope systems, detectors, cryogenics. filters, and interferometers. Individual contributions were made by European and U.S. scientists in each of these fields. The last half day of the Symposium was devoted to a General Discussion among the participants on the needs for future developments and on the present and prospective capabilities of aircraft, balloons, rockets and spacecraft.
The editors are pleased to note that the Symposium appears to have achieved its aim of prompting frank and extensive discussions and they wish to thank all who contributed to this success.Note de contenu : E. A. TRENDELENBURG / Introduction

[Termes IGN] interférométrie à très grande baseIndex. décimale : 30.63 Télémétrie laser sur satellite, Télémétrie laser sur lune, VLBI Résumé : (auteur) Multiple-station very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) is considered from a geodetic point of view. An approach is outlined to deal with relative phase delay data as obtained from measurements on both artificial radio sources at finite range and natural sources at infinity, observed in the simultaneous mode. The approach is basically a range-differences method and allows a treatment in theoretically convenient steps to which the several groups of parameters are primarily confined. This paper deals mainly with the interstation geometry of the VLBI-net.
Attention is drawn to the possible occurrence of singular geometric situations of stations and sources for which no unique solution for the interstation geometry is possible in spite of the presence of an in general sufficient amount of measurement data. For a family of idealized model four-station VLBI-nets a numerical estimate is made of the accuracy likely attainable for the interstation distances, using two hypothetical observation programmes with sources at infinity in supposedly unknown directions. It was found that there is no unique solution if only one natural source is used. In the other programme two natural sources are used and variance-covariance matrices have been estimated with conventional least squares techniques. A variety of declination differences, VLBI-net orientations and maximum zenith distances is considered. It was found that the ratio between estimated standard deviations of the interstation distances and the range-difference measurements lies between 5 and 25 if 9 range-difference measurements are extracted from one pass of each of the two sources, provided cases of marginal observability of one of the sources are avoided and if it is assumed that the directions to the sources are not restricted to zenith distances below 55. Station clocks are supposed to be perfectly synchronized.
