[Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The present study uses a satellite remote sensing approach for assesssing coastal sediment dynamics in the western side of the Zanzibar channel, Tanzania. Four Landsat images (1986, 1998, 1999 and 2000) were used for the study. investigation of the four images revealed that the Ruvu delta north of the river mouth has been growing rapidly, especially between 1986 and 1998, with an annual northward linear growth rate of about 133m year -1 and an annual areal growth rate of about 1 km2 every 3 years. The study identified a palaeo-shoreline feature that is parallel to the present shoreline and located about 1.9 km inland from the present shoreline. An important sediment contributor to river Ruvu is derived from the Uluguru Mountains, a tropical mountainous area located about 200 km from the coastline of the Tanzania mainland. The working hypothesis is that either the observed growth of the delta occured at a gradual rate between 1986 and 1998 or it was mainly an episodic event related to the extreme rainfall events such as the 1997/98 El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, which was associated with extreme rainfall and widespread landslides. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The northern part of Lantau Island in Hong Kong is undergoing very rapid development following completion of the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok on the island. This development is adjacent to a range of steeply sloping hills that experience levels of annual rainfall in the range of 2000-2400mm. Rainfall-induced landslides on this steeply sloping natural terrain are therefore potential hazards to property developments downslope. The objective of this study is to characterize the initiation process and the subsequent travel distance of the landslides resulting from recent rainstorms, by integrating aerial photogrammetry with GIS. These landslides, which occurred during the 18 July 1992 and 4-5 November 1993 rainstorms, were interpreted from sequential aerial photographs. Data on these landslides were collected to form a landslide database. Such data, together with information on geology, slope gradient, elevation, slope aspect, slope shape, and vegetation cover were entered into a Geographical Information System (GIS), to determine the geologic and geomorphologic characteristics of the landslide source and to estimate the travel distance of landslide debris. It is demonstrated that this integrated approach of GIS and aerial photogrammetry could serve as an effective means of landslide characterization. [Termes IGN] spectrométrieRésumé : (Auteur) The use of satellite Thematic Mapper (TM) images in mineral exploration has been very successful in pointing out the presence of key minerals. Here we present the results of the spectral enhancement of a TM image to identify oxides and hydroxylbearing minerals in the GuanaJuato district, using the two methods that yielded the best results in this area: band subtraction and principal component analysis on an image that included only. selected pixels and excluded areas that did not present any interest for mineral exploration. Different types of vegetation cover the study area: crops, bushes and forest. Previous application of conventional methods was used to identify areas where the spectral signatures suggested the presence of hydrothermal alteration. and further detailed spectral enhancement in selected pixels allowed the identification of alteration minerals in areas covered with different vegetation types that do not have a similar spectral response. A field check performed using a PIMA (Portable Infrared Mineral Analyser) spectrometer yielded a good correlation of the marked areas with the presence of hydrothermally altered rock. New areas with argillic alteration were discovered in the Sierra de Guanajuato and the San Anton areas. Also, the main structures were determined by applying several filters to the first principal component. The occurrence of hydrothermal alteration and the presence of main faults were used to define areas favourable for further detailed exploration programmes. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The relationships between field water reflectance spectra and physicochemical data of seven freshwater and five saltwater lakes from the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands were characterized. Selection of the lakes was based on previous inspection of the Airborne Visible/infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) images. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify homogeneous groups of lakes, in which the regression relationships were evaluated. The continuum removal method was applied to characterize minor spectral variations in the depth of the absorption bands present in field and image spectra. The results showed lakes with very distinct spectral characteristics. The transition from the freshwater to the saltwater lakes was characterized by lower values of depth and Secchi depth, larger concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended sediments (TSS), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and potassium (K), and higher values of pH and electrical conductivity. The saline lakes presented a higher overall reflectance in the 400900 nm range than the freshwater lakes, as indicated by the first principal component. From the optically active constituents analysed, DOC better explained variations in water reflectance. The discrimination of the saltwater lakes along the second principal component was due to the decrease in the chlorophyll (Chl) and to the increase in the DOC concentrations from the greenish to the bluish saline lakes. The AVIRIS instrument was able to detect the narrow 630 nm absorption band present in field water reflectance spectra.
