[Termes IGN] récepteur GPSRésumé : (Auteur) The development and numerical values of the new absolute phase-center correction model for GPS receiver and satellite antennas, as adopted by the International GNSS (global navigation satellite systems) Service, are presented. Fixing absolute receiver antenna phase-center corrections to robot-based calibrations, the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) and the Technische Universität München reprocessed more than 10 years of GPS data in order to generate a consistent set of nadir-dependent phase-center variations (PCVs) and offsets in the z-direction pointing toward the Earth for all GPS satellites in orbit during that period. The agreement between the two solutions estimated by independent software packages is better than 1 mm for the PCVs and about 4 cm for the z-offsets. In addition, the long time-series facilitates the study of correlations of the satellite antenna corrections with several other parameters such as the global terrestrial scale or the orientation of the orbital planes with respect to the Sun. Finally, completely reprocessed GPS solutions using different phase-center correction models demonstrate the benefits from switching from relative to absolute antenna phase-center corrections. For example, tropospheric zenith delay biases between GPS and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), as well as the drift of the terrestrial scale, are reduced and the GPS orbit consistency is improved. As a dispersive medium, it is possible to compute its influence on the GPS signal with the ionosphere-free linear combination of L1 and L2 observables, requiring dual-frequency receivers. In the case of single-frequency receivers, ionospheric effects are either neglected or reduced by using a model. In this paper, an alternative for single-frequency users is proposed. It involves multiresolution analysis (MRA) using a wavelet analysis of the double-difference observations to remove the short- and medium-scale ionosphere variations and disturbances, as well as some minor tropospheric effects. Experiments were carried out over three baseline lengths from 50 to 450 km, and the results provided by the proposed method were better than those from dual-frequency receivers. The horizontal root mean square was of about 0.28 m (1ó). [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (Auteur) Mark Weiser is not exactly a household name. He was a chief technology officer at the Xerox Corporation's famous Palo Alto Research Center. This is the same outfit which brought us laser printing, Ethernet communications, the graphical user interface paradigm (including the mouse), and object-oriented programming. Like many of those who make a significant difference in technical fields, Mark Weiser's contributions are well known but his name is not. Dr. Weiser introduced the concept of "ubiquitous computing." He coined this term in 1988 to describe a new generation of the computer era, where the first two generations, that of the mainframe and the personal computer, would be superseded by one in which computers would disappear into the objects that surround us in our daily life both at the office and at home. He further posited that the best computer is a quiet, invisible servant whose "calm technology" informs us but doesn't demand our focus or attention. His idea, often tagged "UbiComp," has borne fruit and we now have smart coffee pots, smart printers, smart copy machines and the like, all connected via a wired or wireless network. Users of some of the smart devices in our UbiComp world, such as mobile telephones, personal digital assistants, cameras, and camcorders, would benefit by knowing their location wherever they might be - whether it's in an open field, on a street surrounded by skyscrapers, or inside an apartment building. As we all know, conventional GPS receivers don't always work where we would like them to. In order for a UbiComp device to know its position anywhere and anytime, we need "ubiquitous positioning" or UbiPos. And like UbiComp, UbiPos should inform us but not demand our focus or attention. In this month's column, we take a look at the available technologies that might be used to supplement conventional GPS positioning and some initial testing that will eventually lead to a UbiPos world, one in which we can locate anyone, anything, anytime, anywhere.
