[Termes IGN] Setchouan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) In the early stages of post-disaster response, a quick and reliable damage assessment map is essential. As time is a critical factor, automated damage mapping from remotely sensed images is the expected solution to drastically reduce data acquisition and computation time. Recently, high-resolution satellite images, such as QuickBird data, have been in high demand by damage assessment analysts and disaster management practitioners. However, the existing automated mapping approaches hardly accommodate such high-resolution data. This research aims at developing a new context-based automated approach for earthquake damage mapping from high-resolution satellite images. Relevant contextual information (including structure, shape, size, edge texture, spatial relations) describing the damage situation is formulated and up-scaled on a morphological scale-space. Speed optimization is achieved by parallel processing implementation. The developed approach was tested with two QuickBird images acquired on 26 June 2005 and 3 June 2008 over YingXiu town, Sichuan, China, which suffered the devastating 12 May 2008 earthquake. In comparison to the reference, the developed mapping approach could achieve over 80% accuracy for computation of the damage ratio. Future research is planned to test the approach on various disaster cases for both optical and radar images using a grid-computing platform towards a cost-effective damage mapping solution. [Termes IGN] Setchouan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) The Wenchuan Earthquake occurred on 12 May 2008 followed by frequent aftershocks. The earthquake suddenly caused heavy damage to roads, bridges, buildings and communication facilities. Two B4101 Citation II remote sensing airplanes from the Chinese Academy of Sciences took off to monitor the region soon after the earthquake and collected images using a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) device and an optical ADS40 sensor. Using images obtained from airborne surveys, a damage consequence chain was mapped that provided information about the type of damage and its extent. This proved to be of great help for rescue operations and after earthquake reconstructions. We present details of airborne survey, images and mapping of damages caused by the earthquake and the use of such information for a rescue operation. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) The Satellite Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) has already demonstrated its potential to map co-, post- and inter-seismic deformation. This paper presents analysis of the surface-displacement field of the 12 May 2008 magnitude 8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake using the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) DInSAR. Six PALSAR interferograms of paths 471 to 476 are generated. A new approach, which uses the information of overlapping interferograms, has been developed to compensate for orbit error. The main advantage of this approach is that the calculation is performed without the need for phase unwrapping. Once the orbit error has been compensated for, the interferograms are then merged to form a single interferogram. The final mosaic of interferograms demonstrates a much more consistent co-seismic surface-displacement field than the original interferograms. [Termes IGN] Setchouan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) Analysis of the low frequency fluctuations of the magnetic and electric fields prior to a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on 12 May 2008 in Sichuan Province is given. We analyse the disturbances of the ionospheric electromagnetic field prior to the earthquake starting 2 weeks before this event, but detailed analysis is given for 6 and 9 May, 6 and 3 days prior to the earthquake, when the observed effects were strongest. Special attention is given to the characteristics of the spectra of these variations and the search for nonlinear effects. This analysis is possible in the time intervals when the extra low frequency (ELF) waveform was transmitted. Although the mechanism of energy transmission from the earthquake preparation zone to the ionosphere is not determined, it can be said that the ionospheric plasma is an unstable medium and that even a small perturbation can lead to variations in the electromagnetic field and plasma parameters. Some attempts at this discussion are given in the paper. The observations by Detection of Electro-Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions (DEMETER) and discussed in this paper suggest the presence of plasma turbulence over the area above the Wenchuan Earthquake on 12 May 2008. The characteristics of the observed disturbances are studied with wavelet and bispectral analysis, tools which are more relevant for analysing plasma turbulence. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution satellite gravity data have been generated and utilized to infer subsurface geological structures in the area of devastating earthquake that struck the Bhuj region in Gujarat on 26 January 2001. Latitudinal gravity profiles have been generated in the Bhuj, Anjar and IBF regions across the epicentres (23.5° N, 69.8° E/Mw 7.0 in 2001; 23.2° N, 70° E/Mw 7.0 in 1956; 24.2° N, 69.2° E/Mw 7.8 in 1819). Substantial differences in gravity anomaly patterns as high as 37 mGal could be observed existing near the epicentre regions. These gravitational differences might have caused due to the plate tectonic processes and due to the changes in densities of different lithospheric zones/sedimentary layers. Temporal variations of the satellite-derived gravity and their probable relations with already occurred major earthquakes in this region have been studied. Hence we conclude that drastic changes in gravity anomalies can be considered as a precursor for occurrences of substantially large earthquakes.
