[Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Quantifying evapotranspiration (ET) is a key element for achieving better water management, especially in regions where agriculture is the main water consumer. A hybrid model combining the SEBAL and RESET models (S-RESET) was developed to effectively estimate actual ET (water use) of the agriculture sector around the Phoenix metropolitan area. To examine how irrigated agriculture water consumption varies with climate, the S-RESET model was applied under wet and dry climatic conditions. Results show that the average ET for active agriculture is 9.3 mm/day (_ 3.8mm/day) during the study period. Seasonal water use was 438 mm for 2000 (drought) and 494 mm for 2008 (wet). Based on the seasonal ET, we concluded that farmers in arid region use the same amount of water regardless of climatic conditions, implying that the agriculture sector as a whole may not be sensitive to drought as long as there is sufficient water from irrigation. This finding carries significant implications for the region's water security. The workshop synthesized the needs of remote sensing scientists to better monitor and analyse urban physical and social dynamics. The workshop was held with urban land use forecasting workshop in April 2011 in Arizona. The four major themes of the jointly held workshops were application, data, scale and case studies. Application refers to how data are used to address urban problems. Data refers to the sources and types of raw data available. Scale is the ever-present concern over data reduction and resolution. Case studies examine a single urban area, typically based on one or two primary themes. One outcome was to integrate multiple case studies to form an urban typology. To respond to this need, this article integrates two case studies on the urban heat island in Atlanta, GA and Phoenix, AZ based on the four themes. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Traditional image processing techniques have proven inadequate for urban mapping using high spatial resolution remote-sensing images. This study examined and evaluated wavelet transforms for urban texture analysis and image classification using high spatial resolution ATLAS imagery. For the purpose of comparison and to evaluate the effectiveness of the wavelet approaches, two different fractal approaches (isarithm and triangular prism), spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I and Geary's C), and spatial co-occurrence matrix of the selected urban classes were examined using 65 X 65, 33 X 33, and 17 X 17 samples with a pixel size of 2.5 m. Results from this study suggest that a multi-band and multi-level wavelet approach can be used to drastically increase the classification accuracy. The fractal techniques did not provide satisfactory classification accuracy. Spatial autocorrelation and spatial co-occurrence techniques were found to be relatively effective when compared to the fractal approaches. It can be concluded that the wavelet transform approach is the most accurate of all four approaches. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Attempts to analyze urban features and to classify land use and land cover directly from high-resolution satellite data with traditional computer classification techniques have proven to be inefficient for two primary reasons. First, urban landscapes are composed of complex features. Second, traditional classifiers employ spectral information based on single pixel value and ignore a great amount of spatial information. Texture plays an important role in image segmentation and object recognition, as well as in interpretation of images in a variety of applications. This study analyzes urban texture features in multi-spectral image data. Recent developments in the very powerful mathematical theory of wavelet transforms have received overwhelming attention by image analysts. An evaluation of the ability of wavelet transform in urban feature extraction and classification was performed in this study, with six types of urban land cover features classified. The preliminary results of this research indicate that the accuracy of texture analysis in classifying urban features in fine resolution image data could be significantly improved with the use of wavelet transform approach.
