[Termes IGN] sémantiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In geographic association rule mining many patterns are either redundant or contain well known geographic domain associations explicitly represented in knowledge resources such as geographic database schemas and geo-ontologies. Existing spatial association rule mining algorithms are Apriori-like, and therefore generate a large amount of redundant patterns. For non-spatial data, the closed frequent pattern mining technique has been introduced to remove redundant patterns. This approach, however, does not warrant the elimination of both redundant and well known geographic dependences when mining geographic databases. This paper presents a novel method for pruning both redundant and well known geographic dependences, by pushing semantics into the pattern mining task. Experiments with real geographic databases have demonstrated a significant reduction of the total amount of patterns and the efficiency of the method. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A rapid increase of environmental data dimensionality emphasizes the importance of developing data-driven inductive approaches to geographic analysis. This article uses a loosely coupled strategy to combine the technique of self-organizing maps (SOM) with a new genetic algorithm (GA) for automatic identification of clusters in multidimensional environmental datasets. In the first stage, we employ the well-known classic SOM because it is able to handle the dimensional interactions and capture the number of clusters via visualization; and thus provide extraordinary insights into original data. In the second stage, this new GA rigorously delineates the cluster boundaries using a flexibly oriented elliptical search window. To test this approach, one synthetic and two real-world datasets are employed. The results confirm a more robust and reliable approach that provides a better understanding and interpretation of massive multivariate environmental datasets, thus maximizing our insights. Other key benefits include the fact that it provides a computationally fast and efficient environment to accurately detect clusters, and is highly flexible. In a nutshell, the article presents a computational approach to facilitate knowledge discovery of massive multivariate environmental datasets; as we are too familiar with their accelerating growth rate. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) A main problem of hard image segmentation is that, in complex landscapes, such as urban areas, it is very hard to produce meaningful crisp image-objects. This paper proposes a fuzzy approach for image segmentation aimed to produce fuzzy image-regions expressing degrees of membership of pixels to different target classes. This approach, called Fuzzy Image-Regions Method (FIRME), is a natural way to deal with the inherent ambiguity of remotely sensed images. The FIRME approach comprises three main stages: (a) image segmenta-tion which creates fuzzy image-regions, (b) feature analysis which measures properties of fuzzy image regions, and (c) classification which produces the intended land-cover classes. The FIRME method was evaluated in a land-cover classification experiment using high spectral resolution imagery in an urban zone in Bogota, Colombia. Results suggest that in complex environments, fuzzy image segmen-tation may be a suitable alternative for GEOBIA as it produces higher thematic accuracy than the hard image segmentation and other traditional classifiers. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article shows that cartographic generalization is best viewed as representing (formulating, renaming knowledge) and abstracting (simplifying a given representation). The general process of creating map is described so as to show how it fits into an abstraction framework developed in artificial intelligence to emphasize the difference between abstraction and representation. The utility of the framework lies in its efficiency to automate knowledge acquisition for the cartographic generalization as a combined acquisition of knowledge for abstraction and knowledge for changing a representation.
