[Termes IGN] urbanismeRésumé : (auteur) Urban visual pollution is increasingly affecting the built-up areas of the rapidly urbanizing planet. Outdoor advertisements are the key visual pollution objects affecting the visual pollution index and revenue generation potential of a place. Current practices of uninformed and uncontrolled outdoor advertising (especially billboards) impairs effective control of visual pollution in developing countries. Improving this can result in over 20% reduction of visual pollution. This article presents a spatial decision support system (SDSS) to facilitate all the stakeholders (development control authorities, advertisers, billboard owners, and the public) in balancing the optimal positioning of billboards under the governing regulations. In terms of its technical implementation, SDSS is based on well-known geospatial open source technologies and uses an analytical hierarchy process AHP-inspired approach in spatial decision-making. It can help users through its category-specific user interface to identify potential sites to position new billboards and the selection of boards from existing sites based on a wide variety of characteristics. The observations of all stakeholders have been recorded through panel feedback to assess the system’s initial effectiveness. The proposed system has been found functional in identifying hot spots for the focused management and exploration of the best suitable sites for new billboards. So, it helps the advertising agencies, urban authorities, and city councils in better planning and management of existing billboard locations to optimize revenue and improve urban aesthetics. The system can be replicated in other countries irrespective of spatial boundaries by incorporating jurisdictional rules and regulations. [Termes IGN] optimisation par essaim de particulesRésumé : (auteur) Process-based ecosystem models are increasingly used to simulate the effects of a changing environment on vegetation growth in the past, present, and future. To improve the simulation, the multimodel ensemble mean (MME) and ensemble Bayesian model averaging (EBMA) methods are often used in optimizing the integration of ecosystem model ensemble. These two methods were compared with four other optimization techniques, including genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), cuckoo search (CS), and interior-point method (IPM), to evaluate their efficiency in this article. Here, we focused on eight commonly used ecosystem models to simulate vegetation growth, represented by the growing season leaf area index (LAIgs), collected globally from 2000 to 2014. The performances of the multimodel ensembles and individual models were compared using the satellite-observed LAI products as the reference. Generally, ensemble simulations provide more accurate estimates than individual models. There were significant performance differences among the six tested methods. The IPM ensemble model simulated LAIgs more accurately than the other tested models, as the reduction in the root-mean-square error was 84.99% higher than the MME results and 61.50% higher than the EBMA results. Thus, IPM optimization can reproduce LAIgs trends accurately for 91.62% of the global vegetated area, which is double the area of the results from MME. Furthermore, the contributions and uncertainties of the individual models in the final simulated IPM LAIgs changes indicated that the best individual model (CABLE) showed the greatest area fraction for the maximum IPM weight (32.49%), especially in the low-lalitude to midlatitude areas. [Termes IGN] signal GNSSRésumé : (auteur) After sunset, in the equatorial regions ionospheric plasma irregularities are generated due to the generalized Rayleigh‐Taylor instability. Under favorable conditions these irregularities develop in the equatorial region while mapping along the magnetic field lines giving rise to large plasma depletion structures called Equatorial Plasma Bubbles with embedded smaller structures on their walls. The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) L1 band frequency is sensitive to irregularities of the size of 300–400 m in the first Fresnel zone, which cause scattering and diffraction of the signal and produce amplitude and/or phase scintillation. Severe scintillation of GNSS signals can in turn cause loss of lock of the receiver code and/or carrier loops. As a result, GNSS navigation and positioning solution can be adversely affected by the ionospheric scintillation. There are multiple GNSS receivers designed to monitor scintillations. These receivers are based on different hardware designs and use different methodologies to process the raw data. When using simultaneous data from different GNSS scintillation monitors it is important to evaluate and compare their performances under similar scintillation conditions. The scintillation monitoring techniques may be useful for many applications that use GNSS signal. The aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of six different GNSS receivers located at São José dos Campos (23.1°S, 45.8°W, dip latitude 17.3°S) during moderate and strong scintillation activity. The amplitude (S4) and phase (σϕ) scintillation indexes from these receivers were analyzed and compared for the nights February 20–21 and November 27–28, 2013. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Volunteered geographic information contains abundant valuable data, which can be applied to various spatiotemporal geographical analyses. While the useful information may be distributed in different, low‐quality data sources, this issue can be solved by data integration. Generally, the primary task of integration is data matching. Unfortunately, due to the complexity and irregularities of multi‐source data, existing studies have found it difficult to efficiently establish the correspondence between different sources. Therefore, we present a multi‐stage method to match multi‐source data using points of interest. A spatial filter is constructed to obtain candidate sets for geographical entities. The weights of non‐spatial characteristics are examined by a machine learning‐related algorithm with artificially labeled random samples. A case study on Fuzhou reveals that an average of 95% of instances are accurately matched. Thus, our study provides a novel solution for researchers who are engaged in data mining and related work to accurately match multi‐source data via knowledge obtained by the idea and methods of machine learning. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (auteur) Forests below rocky cliffs often play a very important role in protecting settlements against rockfall. The structure and development of these forests are expected to be substantially affected by the disturbance of the falling rocks. Knowing about this effect is important to predict the development of protection forests and consider potential effects of the falling blocks in management strategies. The goal of this study is to quantify differences in forest structure depending on rockfall activity in four different sites in the Swiss Alps. For this, we collected data on forest structure in zones of different rockfall activity and derived rockfall impact probabilities based on rockfall simulations. We assessed whether differences in forest structure and signs of rockfall disturbance could be observed between the rockfall zones. We additionally built mixed-effects models to identify the key variables explaining the forest characteristics described by diameter (DBH) and basal area (bA). The forest structure differs between the rockfall zones, however, with varying effects amongst the sites. DBH tends to decrease with increasing rockfall activity, whereas tree density appears to be little impacted by rockfall. For most sites, the number of deposited blocks and the simulated tree impact probability have a significant effect in the models along with the species, whereas for one site, hardly any effect of rockfall was found. Our results, obtained either from direct measurements or modelling, show that rockfall can locally influence the structure of forests, whereas the influence depends on the frequency and intensity of the rockfall disturbance. Impact probabilities obtained by simulations can serve as a good proxy for rockfall disturbances.
