[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The structure and composition of temperate old-growth oak forests are reviewed based on 108 case studies about 175 stands. The stands were classified as dry, dry-mesic and mesic forest types and the variables (density, basal area, size distribution, dead wood volume) were compared among them. Compared to the global range of this forest type, the United States was overrepresented, while West and Central Asia, Europe and Central America were underrepresented. In mesic oak forests the basal area and density of large trees were higher than in dry stands, while tree density and sapling density were lower. The proportion of oaks in tree and sapling layers were the highest in dry and lowest in mesic forests. The size distribution of trees followed negative exponential or rotated sigmoid types. In dry habitats all size categories are dominated by oaks, while in mesic type, only large ones followed the same trend. The volume of dead wood and the proportion of downed dead wood increased along the humidity gradient. In stands with repeated measurements, basal area and relative density of oaks decreased in the last decades. The understanding of the structure and composition of temperate old-growth oak forests is necessary for their restoration and application of close to nature forestry principles. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (auteur) The rapid increase in infrastructural development in populated areas has had numerous adverse impacts. The rise in land surface temperature (LST) and its associated damage to urban ecological systems result from urban development. Understanding the current and future LST phenomenon and its relationship to landscape composition and land use/cover (LUC) changes is critical to developing policies to mitigate the disastrous impacts of urban heat islands (UHIs) on urban ecosystems. Using remote sensing and GIS data, this study assessed the multi-scale relationship of LUCC and LST of the cosmopolitan exponentially growing area of Beijing, China. We investigated the impacts of LUC on LST in urban agglomeration for a time series (2004–2019) of Landsat data using Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and a single channel algorithm (SCA), respectively. We built a CA–Markov model to forecast future (2025 and 2050) LUCC and LST spatial patterns. Our results indicate that the cumulative changes in an urban area (UA) increased by about 908.15 km2 (5%), and 11% of vegetation area (VA) decreased from 2004 to 2019. The correlation coefficient of LUCC including vegetation, water bodies, and built-up areas with LST had values of r = −0.155 (p > 0.419), −0.809 (p = 0.000), and 0.526 (p = 0.003), respectively. The results surrounding future forecasts revealed an estimated 2309.55 km2 (14%) decrease in vegetation (urban and forest), while an expansion of 1194.78 km2 (8%) was predicted for a built-up area from 2019 to 2050. This decrease in vegetation cover and expansion of settlements would likely cause a rise of about ~5.74 °C to ~9.66 °C in temperature. These findings strongly support the hypothesis that LST is directly related to the vegetation index. In conclusion, the estimated overall increase of 7.5 °C in LST was predicted from 2019–2050, which is alarming for the urban community’s environmental health. The present results provide insight into sustainable environmental development through effective urban planning of Beijing and other urban hotspots. [Termes IGN] projectionRésumé : (auteur) Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry without ground control points (GCPs) can effectively improve production efficiency and reduce production costs; this method is especially advantageous in areas that are difficult for people to reach. However, there are a series of problems in UAV photogrammetry without GCPs. One of the main problems is that the accurate camera parameters cannot be obtained through the on-the-job calibration method; furthermore, the inaccurate principal distance will have a serious impact on the elevation accuracy of object points. The other one is that the projection deformation and earth curvature also have impacts on the elevation accuracy, when the mapping task is carried out in the map projection frame. This article explains the specific reasons of elevation errors and proposes an effective solution. First, the camera self-calibration is performed in a geocentric frame with control strips. Then, the exterior orientation elements of the images are calculated in the map projection frame without control strips. Finally, the elevation errors that are caused by the map projection deformation and the earth’s curvature are corrected. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve accurate mapping, and the elevation accuracy has been significantly improved. Protected habitats are often small, isolated and lack continuity. We studied forest planning at a landscape scale as a method to increase habitat connectivity, and improve conservation values whilst maintaining high levels of forest production. We assessed the financial impacts of landscape planning for the landowners, and present a fee-fund system to solve unequal burdens among them. As case studies, we used three landscapes along a latitudinal gradient in Sweden. The results demonstrate some variation between the landscapes in terms of the total cost for set asides and large differences in terms of the financial impact per landowner. Our conclusion is that forest landscape planning may be a way forward to improve conservation efforts, but given the variation in financial impacts, we propose to combine landscape planning with economic tools for compensation. [Termes IGN] ville intelligenteRésumé : (auteur) The growing ubiquity of location/activity sensing technologies and location-based services (LBS) has led to a large volume and variety of location-based big data (LocBigData), such as location tracking or sensing data, social media data, and crowdsourced geographic information. The increasing availability of such LocBigData has created unprecedented opportunities for research on urban systems and human environments in general. In this article, we first review the common types of LocBigData: mobile phone network data, GPS data, Location-based social media data, LBS usage/log data, smart card travel data, beacon log data (WiFi or Bluetooth), and camera imagery data. Secondly, we describe the opportunities fueled by LocBigData for the realization of smart cities, mainly via answering questions ranging from “what happened” and “why did it happen” to “what's likely to happen in the future” and “what to do next”. Thirdly, pitfalls of dealing with LocBigData are summarized, such as high volume/velocity/variety; non-random sampling; messy and not clean data; and correlations rather than causal relationships. Finally, we review the state-of-the-art research trends in this field, and conclude the article with a list of open research challenges and a research agenda for LocBigData research to help achieve the vision of smart and sustainable cities.
